Literacy and numeracy interventions KS4

Hi all . I am aware there are lots of reading intervention programmes and some maths ones aimed at year 6 to 7. Problem is I am in an upper school area!

Does anyone know of/ use and great strategies or programmes at year 9 or above : particularly with a view to raiding standards of FSM pupils who have fallen behind?

I have been asked to research this but not finding much!

I do KS3/4 literacy intervention. This week someone told me about a literacy programme linked to the First News newspaper for kids, which sounds promising, but I have not had time to check that out yet! Also, I think the Edexcel Functional Skills course is useful and has lots of resources/past papers.

Much depends on the level that your students are at and what you are trying to achieve (I mean just literacy/comprehension/language analysis/writing skills etc) and the time you have with them. I have found the best thing is to write my own SOWs based around a novel or poetry or non-fiction resources etc. I would be happy to share if that is the sort of thing you are after.

I have been tasked with finding out what literacy programmes already exist (my boss's favourite mantra is 'no need to reinvent the wheel'!) for a bid.

We do the functional skills and step up already (but obviously they acknowledge low literacy skills exist).

The bid arises from local data which shows lower literacy and numeracy levels (apparently) in our FSM children and , of course, related lower GCSE performance. The head is determined to find a magic wand to wave.

The SOWs definitely sound of interest if we decided the route forward was to employ intervention teachers.

Can I follow for numeracy intervention ideas? I have yet to find anything suitable for ks4 kids.

Sound training has had some spectacular results in a local secondary school.

Make sure that whatever you decide on is evidenced-based

I have been on EEF : nothing on numeracy at all and nothing for KS4 literacy... hence asking on here.

I guess by KS4, the rot has set in...

To be clear, I am not making the decision : just presenting the 'findings'.

I teach English in a secondary school for boys with social, emotional and mental health needs.
We use Toe-By-Toe for those with low literacy levels. They have a range of interventions including Plus 1 and Power of 2 (I think that’s what they’re called...).
The books are great and very unpatronising. They also work very quickly but need to be done 15-20 mins every day!
