Hi All

So I'm trying to take a lead on this particular area (student Engagement) in my department of English at Secondary. Would anyone like to share something they have done recently that worked with a particular class and worked well?

That's a somewhat vague remit! Engagement in lessons? Or out of classroom stuff?

Is there a particular area you want the engagement in? How are you going to measure it. What do SLT want?

Sorry! Very vague. I'm looking to increase engagement in my lessons and roll out some of the techniques that have worked to the department/school. Hoping to measure it via student voice in the first instance.

Was interested to hear from fellow Mumsnetters as to the techniques they try in lessons- that work.

Thanks!

Yorkie

I'm still a bit befuddled. By engagement, do you mean they appear to be bored at the moment? Or do you mean you want them to be all active and excited? This is sort of the progressive vs traditional debate, I suppose ... or you could think of group projects, a debate, role play etc? all the stuff I hate doing or getting a guest in to do poetry if the school has the funds...

Or investigating various 'no hands up' approaches for engagement if what you mean is answering questions? Or try our different seating arrangements? the U shape works best for engagement and collaboration.

Not sure if that helps!

So you want a whole school strategy to make English more appealing to kids in school?

Literacy could be

Role play - physically - or just reading in costumes
Audio books - listening
Reading - sight
Trips - visual/physical
Apps - time lapse plays or retelling stories -
Bringing people into class - authors or poets
Have a POETS day - write your own
Debates - both sides of the argument?
Court rulings? Appoint court and x V y?
Set up a murder scene for a newspaper report
Treasure hunt round school
Newspapers reports - go find some witnesses to an event
Creative boards - or interactive displays
Lists is endless really
