Schools Direct Primary

I’m currently on maternity leave and am looking at a career change into primary teaching. I would really like some input as to what the workload is like in the first few years (ie would I be mad to take this in with two small children) as well as any other advice to help me decide whether to keep looking into this route and career.
Ali haven’t organised any classroom observation/work experience yet but it is next on my list to do!

I hope you're still looking for an answer to this OP. In my honest opinion (I didn't want to hear this when I was training) it is not a sustainable job, the workload is extreme, the hours long and the pay not worth it. I'm in my NQT year and leaving at the end to go on mat leave, I will be going back part time but I don't see myself doing it long term. It's far too stressful.

Before I left in the summer I was working 7.30am - 5pm. (That was weeks without parents evenings, reports, School play, School journey). I had 20+years experience and was pretty efficient with my time. The teachers around me in their first few years of teaching were in at 7 and didn't leave until after 6. It's not a family friendly job anymore.

I’m grateful for your comments and I really do want the honest picture, so thank you. It is sad that it seems teaching is no longer a family-friendly choice and that most people are having quite negative experiences in the workplace when you should all be so highly valued!
