Class reader for Y5

Has anyone got any good suggestions for a really engaging read for a Y5 class - 2 thirds boys if that makes a difference?

I’m going to be doing some cover in the next few weeks and would like to have a book to share at the end of the day- planning on just reading and enjoying - not doing any work on it. I’d like it to be something they really look forward to hearing. I’ve got a few ideas but it would be great to have recommendations of things that have really captured a class’s imagine.

Mine loved Holes.

I often find they like the oldies too- I've just read them a Famous Five and they begged to have another.

There’s a boy in the girls’ bathroom is really good. I think it’s the same author as Holes.

Ooh I’d forgotten about Holes. Haven’t read that for a while. Like Tom’s Midnight Garden as well though. I’d thought of the Machine Gunners as well but need to re-read, not sure if it’s a bit dated.

I love the Silver Sword. Can remember listening to that myself at school and being really excited to hear the next bit. Am building up a nice reading list for myself over Christmas as I’m going to re-read loads of these.

I was watching Detectorists last night which reminded me of The Windvale Sprites by Mackenzie Crook. Has anyone read this? I read it with my own DC and I liked it but they weren’t so keen.

Holes is a good call and also Skellig although that has traditionally been used with KS3 as a class reader it might engage Y5.

What about Wonder as the movie is just out. My class loved it but in lreland so not sure what age Year 5 is.

Yy to wonder. Chapters are short enough to pick up and put down also.

• Latest David Walliams? (Not personally a fan but very popular with that age group)
• Stay where you are and then leave (absolutely brilliant book and one which I think should be required reading for p6/7 (yr5/6) but maybe a bit heavy for this time of year?)
• Christmasaurus (Tom Fletcher's latest offering - I thought it was maybe a bit young but DD's p6 (yr5) class are currently being read it and they seem to be enjoying it.
• there's also a Christmas book by Matt Haig - something about Santa's beard or something that might be good.

Incidentally one of DS's favourite books when he was that age (and he still loves now) and which DD is getting into is a collection of Oscar Wilde short stories. Probably not what you're looking for but something a little different. He loved all the differed stories and I read a few to his class (the selfish giant and the happy prince) and they loved them.

Machine Gunners is a good call - as would be Stormsearch - also Robert Westall.

My ds year 5 hates reading. I mean really hates it. I have tried everything to encourage him without success. Until Wonder!! His class are reading it at the moment and he loves it so much he asked to go to the cinema to watch it! Seriously I couldn't recommend it enough, and we loved the film.

June - year 5 children are 9/10 years.

I'd any thing not main stream I E David Walliams seems to go down well.

My year 5 child is being read on of the magic tree house books at the moment.

DS2 recently read and loved Cressida cowell’s new book The Wizards of Once.

He really enjoyed Wolf brother too.

The Last Wild is very good.
