What can I teach

Currently teaching GCSE & A level History and In charge of A level sociology. Potentially facing redundancy at the end of the year due to over staffing. The school is looking into expanding its post 16 provision. What else could I offer? The requirements are: must be level 3 (a level equivalent) but not a classic academic a level (e.g. Definitely not psychology). Any ideas?

No one? No, I have no ideas either.

Extended project? Universities like it. You could start the course with some research skillls then support them to choose a research question and write/make their project? You could suggest every kid does the EP as a way to broaden their skill set?

Bit of a stab here - how do you become a corse quality assessor for apprenticeships/IL3. Something in that sort of area.

Media studies? Quite a bit of terminology/theory to pick up but sociology would help and it's a really nice subject to teach - I love it!

Thank you for the replies. I do the EPQ already which is bumping up my hours a bit and we already offer media through the English department. I'm going to do some GCSE marking this year and am going to be a PGCE mentor. I'm trying to make myself indispensable (ha ha - no such thing in teaching). I wondered if I'd be able to do health and social care (both in terms of qualifications and whether I'd actually like it!)? I can't see any other vocational courses that I'm really qualified for.

Government and Politics? Or we do a higher ed progression module thing? It's writing personal statements and researching universities. A few of our local universities accept it as being worth a few ucas points.

I love the idea of government and politics and we've been lobbying to offer it for a while. I like the idea of the higher ed progression module as well (do you have any links to this - I will google it too!).
My school are heavily A level based and is thinking of trying to offer more vocational stuff, which is why I was hoping to get ahead of the game in this.

Our progression module is linked to local (West Yorkshire) universities. I'll check out who the examiner is on Monday, I don't actually teach it. Politics is a great A Level and not very difficult for a non-specialist to pick up. We tend to get small classes of really bright, enthusiastic kids.

Can more be done for PHSE - what many school is woefully deficient!

Also yes to life skills, debt, mortgages, bank accounts, rent, council tax - never mentioned to my DC.

G&P is new spec next September, most boards seem to have Politics alone...how about BTEC travel?? It isn't difficult - and is a good 'mop' up course! Also new spec next September...are there any other roles in school you could take on?? With the big push on literacy in history might be something there?? Good luck!!

Government and Politics is the obvious one from a History teacher. It's not a PGCE subject, so always taught by a teacher from another specialism.

My DD's Politics teacher was originally a history teacher, but loved Politics so much that he was able to off-load the history classes and teach Politics full-time.

Government and politics or. RE or Philsophy? All seriously popular at my school! Have you looked into V Certs?

A level Law is popular at dds sixth form.
Philosophy or Religious Studies could also be an option.
Health and social care would be a BTEC rather than an A level if the sixth form offer BTECs.
