Teacher register - who are you and what do you teach?

Having seen loads of teachers around on various threads I thought it would be nice to find out who's who and what you do.

I'm a secondary maths teacher in a comp, been teaching for 12 years, part time for about 8. No TLRs which gives me plenty of time to post ranty threads about the state of education.

I hate Gove and like to picture him in his wellies inspecting pig farms, which is what I like to think his current job is all about.

Just like to say good luck to those on the thread who are escaping. I quit (secondary, physics) last year and I've never felt so well or been paid so well!

Bobbiepin · 03/10/2017 20:28

Psychology and health and social care HOD in a secondary & 6th form, been teaching for 6 years. About to start maternity with my first, and considering going PT.

elephantoverthehill · 03/10/2017 20:30

Oi, Noble, what? Oh sorry it's the register, I was talking to my mate...........D&T for over 30 years. No TLR any more, but still full time. My career has mostly been in High Schools and Sixth form College, only about 5 years ago I found myself teaching years 7&8 when the LA changed the education system around these parts.

hollytom · 03/10/2017 20:33

Primary ks1 here. Dropped to part time this year but still sat here working on my day off.

Shadowboy · 03/10/2017 20:35

I teach Geography and Geology but only to KS4 and KS5 - I haven't taught 'lower school' since 2010. I started teaching in 2006. I am also a principal examiner for an exam board. I am desperate to leave teaching....

Hulababy · 03/10/2017 20:37

No longer teacher, but still in education as teaching support (HLTA)

Was secondary and taught ICT and Business for 10 years.

Then went on to do some adult ed in a male prison, moving into an advice and guidance role, 1:1 support for managing their time inside and planning for release, where appropriate.

Now moved to primary (infant school) and working as a HLTA in EYFS and KS1. Been doing this almost 9 years I think, same school. I do a lot of PPA cover and tend to teach the computing curriculum in that time, plus some other subjects but those are directed by the class teacher - but could be anything in the EYFS or KS1 curriculum, often when I am in their class covering them for a course or similar. I am the Computing lead so plan lessons for whole school, as well as teaching about 2/3 of it, and assisting in the training of other teachers to teach it. Also in charge of the social media for school, and the Online Safety lead too.

cantkeepawayforever · 03/10/2017 20:38

Primary, specifically upper KS2.

Started training once my youngest was in Y1 (was a middle manager in industry before that, my PhD is in science), and have alternated between part time and full time since, depending on demands of home life.

Currently full time.

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 03/10/2017 20:40

Run a specialist Primary autism provision which caters for HFA/Asp and also SEMH and some SpLDs as secondary needs. Love it.

15 years into the job. In the Gove is a dick camp.

PurpleCrowbar · 03/10/2017 20:40

Crowy checking in.

Secondary English. 16 years in the UK before buggering off 2 years ago to be 2nd in Dept in an international school in MENA (waves to Enormous Dormouse.)

Loving my life now.

I outlasted Gove in UK education. By the end, that was pretty much my sole remaining UK ambition.

DumbledoresApprentice · 03/10/2017 20:46

History HOD. In a Catholic girls' secondary. Not academically selective.

itssquidstella · 03/10/2017 20:55

Classics, private secondary school, ninth year of teaching. Have significant additional responsibilities too.

leccybill · 03/10/2017 21:02

Secondary MFL.
No desire to be anything other than a good classroom teacher.
Love teaching and learning, hate all of the other bullshit. Looking for a way out.
Hate what Gove did to the profession.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 03/10/2017 21:03

Head of History. KS4 and KS5 mostly - far too many exam classes, far too many kids in each. Been teaching a loooooong time. 29 years? Worked in very challenging schools for a lot of my career. Now in a lovely school. Love my kids, fed up with the paperwork and hours I do though. And the fact that SLT have decided that roughly 28 pupils per KS5 class is necessary. Yeah...you don't mark the essays do you, SLT?

Goldrill · 03/10/2017 21:04

Another secondary science NQT here. Chemistry specialist but employed as biology.
Used to be science and policy for government agency and finding it hard to think of myself as a teacher.

Kmetsch3 · 03/10/2017 21:12

20 years in city comprehensive
Former head of MFL
Now 0.6 MFL, RE and anything else anyone wants me to do.
Have seen MFL gradually destroyed, but have become resigned to it.
Love being part time.
I haven’t looked at SISRA, a spreadsheet or in fact most of my emails in 2 years.
I’m enjoying myself much more.

DumbledoresApprentice · 03/10/2017 21:14

Ouch CottonSocks! 28 in a KS5 History class is an awful lot of marking. No idea how you manage the NEA with that many kids. Shock

Appuskidu · 03/10/2017 21:23

Primary teacher here in my 20th year. I arrived via an English degree and a PGCE and am beside myself that 'they' are contemplating teaching not being a graduate-entry profession (see other thread).

I have been part time for ages, I have no TLR but am UPS3 and have the SEN allowance for my current SENCo role.

thecatfromjapan · 03/10/2017 21:35

I've loved reading through this thread. I do wonder if I know any of you in RL (especially SandyBeach).

I'm recently qualified Primary PGCE but am waiting a year to do NQT and supply in meantime. We'll see how that goes!

MsAwesomeDragon · 03/10/2017 21:37

Secondary maths here. This is my 14 th year teaching. I teach full time, with not enough time in the day to do the full job properly. No TLR, I can't see how I could possibly fit anything extra into my life.

I love my job but it seems to be getting harder in recent years instead of easier (I'd expected easier because now I know what I'm doing). New GCSEs last year, with an impossible amount of content for the time allocated in the timetable. Just started teaching the new A level course, which again is a lot of work (because I have never taught stats on my life, and I have to this year :( ).

OneOfTheGrundys · 03/10/2017 21:40

Secondary English here.
Teaching since 2002 but took 5 years out for DC.
PRU teacher for 3 years, just back to mainstream. Have run a mile and will always run a mile from tlrs of any description.

geogteach · 03/10/2017 21:41

Former geography HOD now 1:1tutor for local authority home tuition service. Try to stick to secondary but can be required to teach pretty much anything to anyone. Students end up with us for all sorts of
Reasons, we are supposed to be a short term
Provision until students return to school but my record with a student is 2 1/2 years!

LucyLastik · 03/10/2017 21:45

I'm a trainee in primary, based in LKS2 having spent the past 17 years working in EYFS

YorkieDorkie · 03/10/2017 21:47

Recently EYFS, previously KS1. I'm the only teacher in school that can sing so apparently that makes me the music coordinator too!

Appuskidu · 03/10/2017 21:48

Now 1:1tutor for local authority home tuition service.

I would really love to do that-can I ask how you found out about/got that role?

clary · 03/10/2017 21:48

Ja, hier! I was wondering whom I knew IRL too :)

MFL teacher in secondary here, career changed 7 years ago and retrained. Hardest job I have ever done (bitvi don't need to tell any of you that). How are we all doing? I have mouth ulcers and a chest infection I can't shake off, sooo all good!
