Question re Part time days

Hi

I have discovered that although I am 0.6 I am working more than this thsis year due to the way my days fall. As 0.6 I should work 117 days (3 INSET) but based on our school terms I am acutally in for 118.

Has anyone had this in the past and challenged it at all?

It has been discovered as I am being told I need to work an extra INSET day as only 2 fall on my work days and I won't be paid for it - I think I should be and am digging out my contract this weekend to check wording etc. If this occurs I will end up working 119 days instead of 117 this academic year.

Don't know about the working days thing, but they cannot require you to work on a day that you normally do not work at all. If they do want you to, then they should pay you for it.

You only have to work inset on days you work. If you do anymore at my school you are paid for the number of hours additional that you have worked. Good luck 🤞

Are you part of a union you could ring for advice? If you are paid for 117 days, you work 117 days. They can't require you to work more than that without pay.

I've challenged it at my work as I'm part time in a school and they are making us work 4 twilight training sessions so we don't have a Friday inset day at the end of the year. I do t work Fridays so have been told I don't have to attend the twilight sessions or can have toil. If I hadn't challenged it they would have been perfectly happy to let me work the extra hours.

You don't need to work on inset days that fall on your days off. If they expect you to then they either pay you for it or give you another day off in lieu.

Are you in a job share? Due to the way terms/bank hols etc work sometimes a share has to owe each other a bit of time. I've ended up with more bank hols than my job share so I work a half day for her to even it back out as I was over on hols and she was under. We have arranged that ourselves (it was actually me who worked it out) but I queried it with my union and was correct. If you're not in a share then you need to raise it with the school as you should only do the correct number of days over the year. If you get told you're being petty then point out that full time staff are paid for all days they work and are not expected to come in on a day off.

I have been told in the past that if you work .6 then you do .6 of the INSETs. Usually it always seems to work out so have never questioned it. However I have never gone as far as counting my actual days . In my area part time permanent contracts are like gold dust so I am wary of rocking the boat. As part time there has also been issues around ppa time as I never fit nicely into the plans. I also seem to be working an extra half an hour every week this year due to timetabling but have not yet tackled that.

Thanks all. I am secondary so not a job share. I have only counted my days up as I was being told I needed to work the extra day without pay for INSET.

There are a lot of part timers at my place so not that rare and happy to make a point - feeling very undervalued and a lot is expected of us over and above and I do feel expecting me to work 2 full days unpaid is a step to far!

Am going to speak to my union next week was just wondering if others had had this situation.

Thatbis a common misconception. You are required to work the INSETs that fall on days that you normally work.

I work pretty much every day so I'd have to go to every INSET. I don't, I do 0.6 of them.

I’ve been told I have to do 0.6 of inset days, this is both by school and by my union. Scotland though so maybe different. If the inset fell on a day I normally worked and I’d already done however many insets I needed, I wouldn’t have to come in.

Have never counted up the days overall, but it does sound like a fun Saturday night activity!

I have to do two hours a week of duty in our isolation unit - counting the days was a good way to pass the time as its so hard to get other jobs done with some of our characters!!!

Noble, can I ask an off topic question? I've always assumed you're a head of dept. Are you? Ive never come across a head of a core subject who does 0.6 so would love to know how you wangled it if so!

Hahahahahahahaaaa no I'm not HOD. I don't have any TLRs. I'm a bog standard chalk-face teacher who isn't allowed to apply for any promotions in my school because I'm part time. I haven't even been sent on any courses in the last 8 years I am that far down the ladder of responsibility.

Sorry! No words of career-ladder-climbing wisdom here. Maybe change schools to one that's totally desperate.

You don't do pro rata INSET, technically you can be directed to work any INSET that falls on a day you work. If that is all 5 INSET, then you should negotiate with Head.

You aren't paid for days as a teacher, but for hours. 0.6 of 1265 hours spread over the 195 days school is open.

wannabestressfree I applaud you - I couldn't do it. Ours is students with either 6 detentions or a serious misdemeanor in the unit for 1 day only maybe 2. Work is set by normal teaching staff so its just supervision!

Tufted my school expect us to do pro rated INSET - I had an email last year asking for me to provide the dates I had done. I still do all the other directed time things - I am in on the main meeting days so do all, all my required parents evenings etc, detention duties etc. So I am probably over my hours anyway without being expected to work two extra days!

They can't expect you to work more than your contracted hours. It's a very common misconception amongst heads. I work for a union. If it is local authority or an academy and you tuped then just say no. If you do it, then you are agreeing to work for free.

Union also told me I should do a percentage of the training.
Don't start me on p time hours. Days where I wasn't teaching until 11 but had no chance of parking anywhere unless I got there at 8.
Schools are great at wringing every moment out of exhausted staff and staff are too worried about looking work shy and being targeted by SLT to stand their ground. Angry

Thanks - have emailed our HR lady today and will see what they say. I will sit down at some point and work out the hours I am doing over the year.
