To all getting results today - especially my fellow English teachers and the Maths brigade. We did all we could and more.

🥂it's been a long old slog, and looking at the newspaper headlines, I'm not sure it was worth it!

English Language was shocking, Literature was really quite good. Pleasant surprises at top end, mid-range hammered (lots of would have scrapped A equivalent ended up with B equivalents). Maths were beyond outstanding (their AS results were disappointing). Of course this is all contextual and we had to switch English Language board halfway through so maybe next year will be better?

The TES had something about weird English results for good departments www.tes.com/news/school-news/breaking-news/gcse-results-2017-schools-good-english-departments-query-unexpected

But if your department switched specs halfway through, that might explain it.

We had to. We were doing IGCSE which was fine (wouldn't have counted for league tables but head was ok with that). However, they decided at the end of the year 10 that to have funding for A levels you had to have or be working towards GCSE English and IGCSE wouldn't count anymore. Thus going back on one of the two good things Gove did for secondary English (killing SATs being the main one).
