I am leaving teaching to become a childminder and will hand in my resignation tomorrow to leave at the end of the summer term.

Will I be paid in August?

I have read different things in different places so much appreciate any help.

Are you a teacher? If you are you should be paid up until the end of August. Please check with your school though.

Lapinlapin · 21/05/2017 11:38

I guess it will depend on your contract, but you should be. If you're a teacher on a standard permanent contract then you'll be paid until 31st August.

brumteacher · 21/05/2017 12:05

You need to put your final date of employment in your resignation as the 31st August if you want to be paid until then. If you put that your last date of employment is July, that's all you'll be paid for.

laundryelf · 21/05/2017 12:32

To be sure of pay, put 31 August as your leaving date.

toomuchicecream · 21/05/2017 13:30

Agreed. I've resigned to start a new job at the start of next term, which is 4 September. So I've resigned with effect from 31 August and will commence employment on 1 September, even though I won't actually go there until the 4th.

MagicalMrsMistoffelees · 21/05/2017 13:51

Yes I am a teacher.

I just wasn't sure if I'd get paid til August as I'm not going to a new school - I'm leaving teaching altogether.

I will def put 31 August on my resignation letter!

Thanks all - and if anyone else has any other experiences of this, please share!

The only experience I have is of teachers saying their last day of work will be 22nd of July or similar and then wondering why they don't get paid for August.

If it's a local authority school the term finishes on 31st August. If it's an academy they can do what they want, so check your contract or staff handbook.

thebookeatinggirl · 21/05/2017 15:58

Teachers' pay is a salary for the 195 days worked, then divided equally into 12 months. So if you are on a standard contract and teach until the end of the Summer term, then you have already earned August's pay as you have worked all the days, and should definitely be paid it.

Emphasise · 21/05/2017 16:03

Yes but make sure you put 31 Aug on your resignation letter.

Not sure though if you're technically free to do other work whilst still employed as a teacher? Think you need employer's permission to take a second job.

MagicalMrsMistoffelees · 21/05/2017 16:27

Thanks for this - all very helpful.

I won't be working til September at the very earliest (though probably not even then as apparently it takes ages to set up as a childminder) but definitely worth taking into account just in case.

Yeah you can't start work in August, unless you negotiate a finish date before (and stop getting paid then), or get permission from your employer as you are under contract until 31st August.

Hi, so ive been fired from my job in a school due to my absense, i got fired in july just before half term started however on the letter it states my contract would have ended august 31st, will i be getting payed fir the month of august or does that not apply to me considering i got fired on the last day of school in july.

MrsHamlet · 13/08/2023 15:53

@Helpmea if you've been fired, I assume your union is involved. You need to speak to them.

You'd be better off starting your own thread and explaining the circumstances a bit further.

But the best thing to do is to call your union for advice.

Hi, so ive been fired from my job in a school due to my absense, the issue is not that i got fired, im just wondering wether or not ill be payed for the summer holidays, month of august. i got fired in july just before half term started however on the letter it states my contract would have ended august 31st, will i be getting payed fir the month of august or does that not apply to me considering i got fired on the last day of school in july.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 15/08/2023 11:26

@Helpmea you will be better starting your own thread on this. But if your letter says your contract ends on the 31st August then you will get paid for August.
