Educationy holiday reading list suggestions...

I'm off for a holiday in half term during which I hope to do very little. I have lots of trashy stuff to read already. Crime and thrillers aplenty. The DC are stocked with books, games etc and there is a pool so we are all going to behave like slugs all week.

I'd like some thinky reading suggestions too please. I'm reading 'Making Good Progress' by Daisy Christodoulou currently. Anything English teaching/SEN/literacy in particular.

Have you read Christodolou's first one? 7 Myths about Education? V thought provoking!

Also Michael young's knowledge and the future school in a similar vein?

The Michaela book- battle hymn of the tiger teachers- v controversial but will make you think.

Anything by Doug Lemov- reading reconsidered and teach like a champion.

Mindset by Carol Dweck

Mary Myatt/ hopeful schools

Robert peel- progressively worse- damning account of "child centred" educational practices.....

Have to say am Impressed by your dedication to read stuff like this in HT- I am familiar with these because of my masters research but now I'm finished Im reading stuff as far removed from work as possible!

I like Daisy C. and am also hoping to read the Michaela book.

Mark Burns' (Malit) book is good. I want to say it's called Teaching Backwards but I could be totally wrong...it's been a long and tiring day and I'm filled with medicine (man 'flu).

'The Explosive Child' - Ross Greene

I have that one Sleeper - I took a lot from it... my DS2 has asd and struggles sometimes.

That's exactly the sort of book I mean though-something that makes you really reflect on why we do things a certain way.

How did you find the Ross Greene book?

My whole practice is based around Ross Greene's ideas in lots of ways.

Have you read anything by Margot Sunderland? 'The Science of Parenting' is great and the ideas can be translated into practice in school.

Bounce (the myth of talent and power of practice). Technically not a teacher book but it impacted my teaching!

Making Every Lesson Count by Shaun Allison and Andy Tharby had a huge impact on my practice as did Doug Lemov's Reading Reconsidered (essential reading for all English teachers imo). Currently reading Daniel Willingham's Why Don't Students Like School and I have both of Daisy Christodoulou's books lined up for next. I have read Tiger Teacher and it is thought-provoking but maybe not as useful of some the other suggestions you have had. I have also recently read Isabel Beck's Bringing Words to Life which is another transformative one for vocab teaching.

Ah I love the sound of the vocab one. Something I never quite remember to address head on. We do vocab but so often as a result of a strong text, not often enough the focus.
