Permanent contract to a fixed term contract from September...

Just that really...
I am currently employed as a 0.6 PT teacher. I cover PPA and interventions. I have confirmed in writing that I would be able to go to 0.8 from September. My HT told me in passing that I will be on a fixed term contract next year due to the budgetary restrictions. Can they do this? I am waiting for the union to get back to me but I am feeling a bit pee'd off about it...
Has anyone had any experience of fighting this and winning or am I just going to have to put up with it?

Do they mean the 0.6 would be perm still but the extra 0.2 would be fixed term?
Seems dodgy if they mean the whole 0.8 is fixed term but fair enough If just the 0.2

No, my understanding is that my 0.6 is perm but when I move to 0.8, I will also move to a fixed term contract.

I wouldn't move to a temp contract in the current climate. It sounds a bit sneaky of your head.

Sorry - meant fixed term contract not temp. What do you think your heads motivation is for doing this?

Did you request to increase your hours or say that you would be able to increase. I am pretty sure that they can not take away your permanent contract unless they made you redundant and as there is a .8 job available then they could not justify making you redundant. I am no expert though so hopefully your union would be able to help.

I imagine that yes they can do this because the 0.8 contract is an offer of a new job but it is always one that you can refuse.

Very cheeky of the Head!! You need to refuse the job - you're effectively resigning from the 0.6 job, and then being given a new 0.8 temporary job. Then, once it's temporary, it's very easy to get rid of you, with no redundancy pay.

Definitely get your union involved. If you really want to go up to 0.8, then at the very least make sure the 0.6 part is still your old job on a permanent contract, and the other 0.2 is on a temporary contract. Do NOT resign from your current 0.6 job!
