Does anyone have experience of Studio Schools?

I've got an interview next week for a science teacher at a Studio School. A couple of people I've spoken to have said I'm mad to consider working in such an environment, I'm aware they have a high level of SEN children. The website doesn't really give much away and they don't have an ofsted report. Has any-one come across these schools before?

As students only go to them aged 14, they tend to either struggle to recruit, or have an intake mainly composed of students who have been failing at or hate their current secondary school. Results for this type of school tend to be poor.

That said, it would be worth a look around before binning as a bad idea. Ask them about recruitment, results and so on to get an idea of the future will pan out for that particular school.

I worked at a studio school that converted into an alternative provision/PRU as that was the intake we got. Preferred the PRU though. 😂

I only know that the one who joined our academy is shutting in September.

They struggle to remain financially viable as they have recruitment issues due to the age profile. They are the most risky type of school and more likely to close. Unless it's part of a large academy chain it is a gamble.

I would love to work in one, but my background is in EBD Special Schools and that is what I would assume I was going into.

If you are interested in that kind of work I would recommend looking into SEMH schools. I teach English in one in south east London and I love it (just coming up to 4 years, I did my NQT year there).

It's a similar type of work to studio schools but with a lot more stability and predictability than a studio school (and a lot less of the crap that goes along with mainstream teaching).
The vacancies are less common but there tend to be fewer applicants.

The one local to me seems to be doing pretty well. I'd work there.

Ramsay there were lots of issues at NCB before it joined the MAT. Not surprising it's closing.
