Primary School Head / Office Staff - Child's records

Can I ask how long it takes to transfer a child's school records from one school to the next. It seems to take weeks / months but I don't understand why. Current school say they have asked former school several times. Current teacher would like to see his previous assessments, and I would also expect this to be the norm - Is it straightforward? - or does it have to pass through head teacher or local authority - please give me an idea of process and would it help if I contacted old school. There were no other agencies involved or SEN - so I can't understand the delay. Thanks

Ours very much depend on the individual school. If we pass on a pupil we make sure the stuff gets sent on as soon as the school ask for it. It's not unknown for us to receive no information at all and then find out the child had ASN teaching time or support and we only find out about it at parents' night

If its an in-term move I transfer the electronic file the morning the pupil starts their new school (I don't do it any earlier as I've had pupils turn up when parents have changed their mind over the weekend). Incoming files depend on how efficient the other school is even though its a 2 minute job so I don't know what the problem is when they tell me for the 5th time that its on their to do list . Not all schools hold paper records for pupils and there's less likely to be one if the pupil's changed schools several times. Where schools are slow to forward information we ask parents to bring in copies of previous reports etc.
