NQT year finished, will my salary go up next school year?

Ive finished my NQT year very successfully thanks to a lovely school setting.
How does it work now?
Does my salary move beyond NQT rate automatically or will I have a performance review sometime in the autumn term?
Im going off on maternity leave in December so Im worried that they'll not move my pay scale up because I'll only be there for 2 half terms of my first year as a fully qualified teacher?

Hi well done on getting through your NQT year! Hope you enjoyed it! My advice applies to state education! If you have passed the year you will automatically go up a scale. If you had been failing you should have been told this was potentially the case long before now. Have you met all of the National Teacher Standards? If so, yes you have passed and should have an incremental pay rise.
The Governors may have to 'approve' it and sometimes this happens in September but then it is backdated. Maternity has nothing to so with it.

It's my understanding that no rise is automatic anymore and all rises are at the discretion of the head. I know mine is dependent on my performance management targets. We don't retain the right to scale maintenance anymore either, so moving jobs is also a time to negotiate.

I would imagine that your completion of your NQT year was your target?

In our school you would go up a pay point but for us that doesn't happen until November time and your pay is backdated.

Thank you! There have been no problems and I met all of the Teacher Standards (again thanks to lovely supportive mentor and a head who believed in me)

Well done! Go and thank the head / mentor for their support and then simply ask ht if you have gained your increment. They sound nice so won't mind an honest question!

You will have an appraisal in October time probably. If you have met your targets then the HT can recommend you for progression. The governors then moderate etc. You then get your back pay for sept and oct into November's salary.

Sorry to hijack but do you have any hints / tips as to how you had such a successful NQT year? It's nice to hear a positive story

It's hard because I really feel that being so supported by the head and my mentor has been the key ingredient so I hope you've got that.
But here are a few

• know your rights as a NQT, read The burgundy book

-Join a union -Don't aim for perfection -Try not to work evenings or weekends -A well slept teacher is much better than an exhausted one, remember you're the most expensive resource in the room

• Don't reinvent the wheel, use online resource banks and even lesson plans
• Keep going even when you're tired/ill/ burnt out because once youve got your NQT year done and dusted you'll be able to work anywhere and under the hours that suit you
• don't participate in work place gossip of any kind

-If anyone bullies you, log every incident -be very clear with teaching assistants what you want and need them to be doing at any given part of the day (they're not mind readers and do really want to help!)

• be honest with your head as soon as you start to feel overwhelmed.

Finally, there will be days where you hate teaching, parents and colleagues don't worry it's called being overwhelmed.

Congratulations! As for pay rise, after passing your NQT year you automatically go up (although this isn't usually in effect until Oct/Nov). After this it is all performance based. Your NQT year is already performance tested so passing that means that you are able to go up a scale.
