Working 4 days. Who plans the 5th day?

Until now I have worked 4 days with another teacher planning and teaching the 5th day (lots of discussion obviously). Next year my 5th day will be taught by my HLTA. I know she won't be expected to plan and set up but is it my responsibility? I don't mind planning maths and English as I know it needs to follow on but what about the rest of the day? I'm not being paid to do it and my ppa is reduced so it surely isn't my responsibility is it?

A HLTA can be asked to plan, deliver and assess. It is supposed to be done under a teaches supervision though that doesn't mean you having to sit and do it with her, just having an overview.

However reality is often different especially if the HLTA has a specialism they have been employed for.

Are they using the HLTA to cover your PPA it is it that they're employed as a cheap teacher for that day?

I don't think teachers are supposed to have to plan work for their PPA but again, reality varies.

I'm a HLTA and cover 2 afternoons. I plan and assess. I cover RE, PHSE and Art so not the 'meaty' subjects - although teachers tend to like getting rid of RE!

I think if I had to cover maths and English the class teacher would give me some sort of planning. However, it would probably consist of tying up loose ends or work based on input from earlier in the week.

I am working Tues to Fri so my HLTA will teach all Monday plus cover my ppa. I just feel that if I have to plan and Prep for that day I might as well be there getting paid for it too.

Can you give them the 'stand alone' subjects? You could have a termly or half termly chat about it but let them plan. My teacher lets me get on with it. I run the odd thing past her but just just follow the curriculum.

Would it not be so much easier for them to teach the Friday?

I would leave mental maths and tables practise, spelling (test, and introduce new list), handwriting, a reading comprehension and PE. All straightforward for HLTA to plan and assess.

I work 4 days a week with a SENCO covering the Monday. She does planning and teaching ;reading comprehension, maths investigation, phonics,computing and PE. It works ok thankfully it means I don't need to have too much to do with her either!

I'm a HLTA I cover in several classes and do my own planning. I sometimes cover at other times and I'm sometimes left planning sometimes not.
Why not have a chat about every six weeks and then leave it to her. I do Guided Reading for one class why not do that and comprehension depends if KS1 or KS2 of course. Times tables, shape , time measurement. Some practical work.
I also teach Art, D&T, RE but have covered ICT in the past. I taught Science for a year once until someone complained that I shouldn't be doing it. I have an 'A' Level in Science which only two teachers have. I' m a keen gardener so actually get asked about plants.

You shouldn't be planning for work to be done on the day where you don't work, however, I know that its easier said than done. What I did was have a handover book where I'd leave details of what I'd done and the other teacher could pick up from that and then leave me details to the same effect. We both made sure we had access to the SOW etc and it worked well. This might work better through email because of Monday being the day you aren't there.

I'm not sure about HLTA but if they expected to plan then this system would probably work. Don't be led into planning for your day off, its not as if you are requiring cover - they are not your class on your day off.

If you are contracted to work 4 days then you only plan the 4 days you teach, but I know where you are coming from. In the past when I returned after maternity I did 4 day's and the fifth day was done by various people ranging from HLTA, long term supply and a teacher in school for the day who usually did ppa cover. It was Friday so in the afternoon they had ICT and this was done by an external persons that was sorted, in the morning they did writing which whoever was in did and marked. The rest of the morning was taken up by spelling tests, assembly, and a practical maths lesson. It was linked to the weeks work done by me but isolated if that makes sense. Worked well. I can also recall I was told by slt that I was under no obligation what so ever to plan as my contract was 0.8 so no. Not my responsibility, I left planning g if out on a course as they had the fifth day teacher then but never on a Friday.
