Teachers - should I have to arrange cover for my class for midwife appointment??

As subject really! My head has told me to take my next appointment as ppa by swapping my actual time with a colleague's or by arranging for someone else to come in to cover my class for a couple of hours so I can attend my 28 week midwife appointment. Is this right? I thought I was entitled to time off for these medical appointments?

You are entitled to time off. It is your responsibility to inform your head and theirs to sort out cover.

Nope- it's definitely nonsense! You don't even have to set work if you wanted to be a dick about it- you can also take time for ante natal and exercise classes without having to lose ppa. Nobody would but you're entitled to!

By arrange cover I thought you meant set work for them. I was going to say yes of course... It just hadn't occurred to me that they would expect you to actually rearrange ppa or ask someone to come in. Clearly not your responsibility.

Cut and paste the relevant section of the Burgundy book, and send it to them, CCd to your union rep.

My Hod spoke to his union when our SLT member who approves absence asked me to sort cover within the department (secondary). I gave him the benefit of the doubt as he was covering but got HR to politely remind him he couldn't really object!
