Maths assessment

Other than summative assessment and children's books, what other records do you keep to assess maths?

Our HT wants to ensure we are not totally reliant on end of term tests but I'm at a loss of what else to use which doesn't result in additional paperwork.

Obviously, I use AfL every day in the classroom but there is no written evidence of this.

Like most schools I know of, we've bought in to one of the many electronic systems which require us to tick off each objective for each pupil when we've seen them achieve it. 3 times per pupil per objective. Massively time consuming and I'm really not at all sure what it tells me about my pupil's attainment. But it's in pretty colours and produces data for the HT to wave at the big O.

There are loads of things you could do to keep records of Maths assessments - it depends what your HT wants to achieve. Records for attainment in fluency are comparatively easy to keep ie tables tests. Reasoning & problem solving are a bit trickier, especially as so much of that is oral. I use lots of photographs, but that's more evidence of teaching/learning as opposed to assessment. I think you need to go back to your HT and ask what they want the information for. Once you've got that, you may well find that all you need to do is tweak the way you do your AfL so you've got some kind of record.
