Do you actually 'DO' your subject outside of the classroom

I'm not sure if this thread is aimed at Secondary subject teachers, or more widely.

I recently was chatting to an Creative Arts teacher/colleague who was telling me how much she liked to paint/draw/whatever outside the classroom.

She seemed astonished, almost incredulous, that I might enjoy doing Maths outside the classroom.

I love my subject, I just wondered on other people's thoughts.

I'm MFL. I read and watch films in my "other" languages and I use them on holiday. They often come in useful in pub quizzes too... Does that count?! :)

Of course it counts! How could I not think of MFL as one of the most used and useful subjects outside of the classroom!

I am also MFL. I suppose I do use it outside the classroom ,speaking to my friends in their native Lang and occasionally browsing the Internet.

I am not a teacher but a parent but I have found that the best teachers are always those who are fully engaged in their subject outside the classroom. My favorite English teacher always has her nose in a book, borrows books from her pupils etc

I think lots of people find it hard to acknowledge that Maths exists outside the classroom.

I am MFL but I only really use it on holidays. I would like to make more time to read in other languages but I never get round to it.

I am an English teacher - read voraciously, take creative writing classes and have writing projects on the go, and follow publishing news sites. It's definitely in the blood!

I don't know if it's "doing" it but I was (10 years ago now) a geography teacher and I find I use it all the time - map reading, just looking at the landscape I can't help but figure out the rocks, the geological processes. Driving through a city I find myself figuring out urban development in my head. Dh says I "read the world" but it just is second nature.

I also bore my dc witless teach my children what I know! Realised this at the weekend. I have an irrational love of cheesy disaster movies and had just got my hands on the dvd of "San Andreas". I started explaining what an aftershock is to dd2 (12). She said she knew and when I asked her why she eye rolled and looked at me like this and said "Mum, I live with YOU!"

MFL, though not currently teaching. I definitely use it in everyday life - to talk to friends, read articles on the internet etc. (and my email account is set to a foreign language, albeit accidentally). Wish I had more time to read books in any language, but when I do read a bit of it is in another language. Can't afford foreign holidays, but definitely was used a lot when I could.

RE although moved into primary. My holidays are still spent visiting places of worship & reading around the subject. I love it.

Any other maths teachers who do' maths?

Me! I love getting stuck in to maths. I have recently started a STEP group at school and I love it!

I have a corridor notice board that I change regularly with anything that has caught my eye. Some kids like it...

Not sure I do maths outside the curriculum anymore though. My degree stuff seems a long time ago.

I am a science teacher and always on alert outside of school - for relevant news item, and any new resources that I can bring into the subject to make it fun and exciting.

I have practised one too many chemistry experiments in my kitchen and have lots of scars on my work tops and cupboard fronts. DH takes it remarkably well.

Oh yes, every so often my old job sent me a product design to be optimised. Sometimes I have to look things up , Maths saves loads on prototype building.

How do you do maths outside the classroom? Apart from the obvious stuff like working out your shopping bill or how much to tip in a restaurant. Genuine question.

My secondary teacher DH does masses of his subject outside the classroom, but then he is a class music teacher, so it's fairly obvious how and why he might be doing stuff related to that even when he's not being paid!

I teach MFL so it's not the easiest, but I do enjoy watching TV shows/films in target language (Deutschland 83 was good!) and of course I love to go there

In the past I was involved in a French speaking class but I had to give it up as don't have the time sadly. I read French and German books now and then and more often magazines/things on the internet.

I also relish any MFL category on Pointless

I teach music and do LOADS of music outside work. Constantly rehearsing, singing, teaching, playing, coaching and performing. It's exhausting but so important to me to keep my skills up. I've spent years learning how to do all this stuff and it's more than a job, it's a vocation.

Art teacher here...I've always got ideas and trying to make things for family presents etc but we've got 2 dc and I just don't get the time...I have to set myself deadlines or go to evening classes to make enough time to do creative things.

Maths teachers win at cards, the probability of winning is much better when you know what that probability is.

I don't use maths in the same practical way as an MFL teacher may use their skills, but I do enjoy 'getting stuck into maths' as giraffe so splendidly phrased it.

I'm health and social care but do maths for fun. A friend introduced me to projecteuler.net/

As for my main subject, well I no longer work in health care but as I have quite a few medical conditions I sort of have to keep involved.

Also because things change, laws are changed, regs updated you can't teach the same thing you did 3 years ago (not saying anyone does).

My kids told me over dinner tonight that I must be a really good history teacher because I'm so old!!!
