Teaching science through stories

Hello Everyone

I am currently in the final year of my Ba Primary Education degree. I am specialising in Science and am writing my dissertation on the value of using stories to teach primary science however I am having great difficulty in finding a school to undertake my research in. I was wondering if any Key Stage One or Two teachers use stories within their science teaching and would be happy for me to undertake my research in their class? I am based in the midlands but am very happy to travel to a school out of the area.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like any more information about my research.

Are you also looking at the huge disadvantages? Some people just don't follow stories very well - others get distracted by them (so once you've said "there was once a princess" their imaginations have taken over so they may not hear another word for 2 or more minutes) etc. etc.

Thank you for your reply. The main focus of my dissertation is on the benefits of using stories but I will definitely be touching on the disadvantages as well.

Secondary here...

I wouldn't teach initially through stories, but definitely use songs and stories to aid memory. I think this is pretty well documented, eg through Learning to Learn.

When I did my PGCE in 1994, it was a common exercise to use poetry in science. Again, the idea is to use the rhyme and rhythm to aid recall.

Good luck in your research.

You could organise a meet up/ group of homeschoolers to teach to. There are loads of groups that would do this in my area.
