How long to take off work?

I'm going to have minor surgery next week, and I've no idea how long I should take off work.

My manager is lovely, and says to take as long as I need.

How will I know how long I need?

Ask your doctor or surgeon.
I had minor surgery last year and was fine with two days off work and the weekend to recover. They offered me a one week fit note.
It depends on you and the operation.

Would you go back if you felt fine but the place was still sore?

I had two weeks off with gall bladder removal. I was in hospital a week before hand as i was very poorly and was given the standard two week sick note. Looking back I should have got another sickness note from GP as I really struggled on my return.

You need to seek medical advice. Remember if you are off for longer than 7 consecutive days (including weekend) you will need a sick note. The royal college of surgeons had advice leaflets on their website for many routine operations.
