Any Y6 teachers out there who will still want to teach y6!?

I think they are going to have to pay year 6 teachers more. There's no way they will want these classes otherwise!

I agree, to be honest. Our Y6 teachers are amazing, but the stress is horrific and several of ours left just because the head refused to let them move down to Y4 or 5 for a break. It was because nobody else would go up to Y6!

I am in year 6 more out of force than choice! I don't know how long I will be staying if I can't move next year...
I agree on the pay, that could tempt me but would have to be a flipping amazing package offered.
What is harder is it is often Y6 teachers who are SLT etc and so the job is just going to get unmanageable.
This year is bad enough not really knowing what is going on.

Since tables should be known by year 4, shouldn't it be the y4 and under teachers who are accountable...

Anyway, I'm a y6 teacher and tbh, I do think children should know their tables. However what always frustrates me with these things is that there is absolutely no consideration for children with any SEN.

I love y6 but I must admit the lower years do appeal...

The grammar requirements alone are making me rue accepting the year group again. How many tenses do they honestly need to know? I am struggling to find enough material for the new test and have resorted to making my own test papers based around the (frankly horrifying) one measly sample we got given and 11 plus papers.

Agree about the grammar phleb. It's just ridiculous.

Surely that should read 'parents will be judged'! It frustrates me no end that so many families fail to practise times tables at home. The concepts should be taught in school but with a jam packed curriculum most of the memorising should be done at home in my opinion.

Agree on grammar too, far more of an issue for me than times tables which I agree should certainly be known.
The GPS has become rote learning of terminology rather than them being able to use it in writing. The volume of grammar is extreme. phleb I'm using a mix of testbase to find past questions on the topics (limited though as curric changed) and CGP have separate grammar, punctuation and spelling workbooks.

I completely agree - tables can never be fully learnt at school, they need to be repeated ad nauseum at home to sink in. It's the parents' job, just as much as the teachers'. And I'm a parent, not a teacher!

I am struggling most with the new grammar requirement " within writing", that bit on the new paper that requires them to comment on the use of grammar within a text extract. I'm trying to approach it through guided reading as well, but there just are not any questions like it on test base or elsewhere.

That, and the bloody four hundred tenses. Even prepositions are not just prepositions anymore, they're of time or place. And don't get me started on the variety of adverbs. Really, what is the point? For every child who loves this stuff ( and there are some, it's like a game to them if I do it right) there are others ( including my son) who are just paralyzed by fear and now frightened to write because they get it "wrong". Don't get me wrong, grammar is important. But I used to be teaching this stuff in Year 8 and 9 when I taught secondary, not in year 6.

There is a small news item in The Times today p 18 (paper copy, cannot find a link) that says that because of a teacher shortage, year 5 & 6 pupils are being bussed from Easington to Partington primary schools for English and Maths, after a long term supply teacher resigned,
the head teacher Sally-Ann Smith says that the post has been advertised twice without success.
May be for reasons related to this thread?
