SATs for 7 year olds?

There is talk on the news this morning of SATs being reintroduced for 7 year olds a decade after being discontinued. Just wondered if I've missed something as what I have thought were SATs have never stopped at our school and both my DCs have done them in recent years. Can anyone enlighten me?

They mean formal, externally marked ones, not teacher assessed ones. Like they have in Y6.

I think they have been remodelled and relaunched. They are hideous - my soontobesevenyearold is taking them in May. She's got issues with processing and labelling her as a failure at this stage will nicely crush her just blossoming self confidence. They are hard, including grammar, pretty advanced maths and comprehension I don't remember getting to until at least 10! Grr! Thanks Nicky Morgan.

The SATs have been done bit informally in year 2-not on any set day or in exam-like conditions and have been internally marked (though obviously carefully externally moderated). When done properly-they cause no stress to the child they often don't realise they are even doing them.

Mrs Morgan wants them to be conducted in the same way as y6 sats. Like exams.

I'm not a fan of Nicky Morgan, but this hype is just MEH.
Yr2s already get tested.
Yr2s already have SATs.
None of that is new.
At our school they start doing something that looks like formal exam lessons in autumn of yr3, so only a few months later there would be the exam feel.
The pressure might be different on the teachers with NM's changes, but mostly not proposing anything that will be radically different for the children.

They want the figures so they've got another stick to beat teachers with.

Mrs Ultra nothing convenient about it at all my daughter is adopted and her early neglect has left her with a neurological processing disorder that profoundly affects her ability to access language both verbally and on the page. She lacks vital neurological pathways because she was almost non verbal until the age of five. . She has worked so hard and come so far in such a short space of time and I am blooming proud of her. She is now keeping up well in a mainstream school. This is not the adoption board however, so I thought I would shorthand it. Thanks for tut input.
