How does your school deal with children moving to another school?

Thats it, what do you have in place to help them with the transition? Do they get a goodbye/gift/card/good luck? Are they spoken too about any worries they might have?

It depends. Do you mean year 6 moving up or a child leaving at the end of another year? Also it depends why they are leaving too.

Not year 6, mid term. Why does Why matter?

Because in year 6 they're all leaving so it will be very different.
It also depends why they're leaving - is it because you are unhappy with the school or moving or another reason?

For children leaving mid year for whatever reason we'll always do a card and make a bit of a fuss!

So you might big up the other school and give the child a positive out look. Would you tell the class?

We make a card as a class and the whole school say goodbye in assembly.
No, I wouldnt "big up" the new school...(I usually don't know the new school, so that would be rather silly). You'd have to tell the class, otherwise it would make signing the card a tad awkward.
However, we've also had children, where the parents didn't want that information shared until the last minute...and those, who told us on the Friday afternoon at pick-up time that their child wouldn't be returning the following Monday. I find that a bit weird, to be honest...unless you are on the run.

We say goodbye in class and acknowledge that they are leaving and that's about it.

It happens all the time at our school because of it's location and we also have children arriving all through the year. The children are given a card and people say goodbye in class and they are also given a pack to take to their new school with assessments and reports in to enable the new teachers to know what they have been doing.

It's part of the normal so no fuss is made. Why, what do you think should happen?

the class might make a card and we say goodbye and good luck. It is reasonably common in some schools. I wouldn't expect a massive fuss tbh.

At our primary it was a simple card and a goodbye for younger children, but as they got older the class parent rep would make a photobook of memories and on one occasion the school made a DVD where each child said a message. The children were generally leaving to move abroad so the move wasn't just a switch to a nearby school. For all children leaving in year 6 the teachers made a CD with photos from events in the final year e.g. The year 6 residential. Must have taken them ages!
