Prom - lovely.

Was our prom last night. I love this evening - lots of (mostly)delightful young people looking all grown up, excited and happy to be there. The girls generally look about 23 and I love to see the boys - who I've been nagging all year to tuck their shorts in - looking so handsome and smart. Aw.

Ours was also last night...if it was the same one you clearly left early, before the assistant head got drunk, threw up and was propositioned by yr13 girls!! Other staff members were competing tequila shots with students...dignified it was NOT! I left as I am the old boring one!!

Aah, I used to love prom as a secondary school teacher. We used to spend almost as much time choosing our outfits as the students. I never used to drink at prom though-was too scared of making a total tit of myself. Was lovely having a good laugh with all my students Smile

Mine was Friday night. It was lovely. One poor girl has been in hospital since her last exam but they let her out for the evening. Her mum had to collect her and take her back at the end Sad She looked gorgeous - really elegant, right up til the point that she hoiked her dress up to show me her catheter bag! Told me it was embarrassing... I pointed out that it was only embarrassing if she showed anyone. They all looked lovely, and were so well behaved. Teachers were hogging the dance floor by the end.

With my parent-of-two-daughters hat on, I would like to find whoever it was that introduced the huge money-spinning, obsessive appearance-based, peer pressuring, financially crippling nightmare that is prom, and shoot them.

I'm a mum of 2 girls too and I get some of what you're saying about the expense (tho lots of our girls were proudly showing off their £20 frocks) and the vacuous vanity of it.

But. The biggest argument in favour if proms is this, IMO. Wealthy/middle class kids will go to lots of similar events in their lifetimes - uni balls, professional association dinners, awards nights etc. But the traveller kids and the less bright kids whose parents are unemployed/ working poor will never have the experience again. So that adds an extra dimension to the "prom thing" IMO.
