DBS check question

Sorry if this is a silly question but it's been a long time since I got a new teaching job.

When you receive your new DBS check for a job in a new school, do you need to take it in to them or can they see it online? It's been posted to my home address but I can't remember if I need to hand it in or not.

I have to take mine into work and they take a copy of it.

You should take it in. Some schools will insist on keeping a copy.

It is not legal for schools to take a copy. All they are entitled to is to have sight of the document and record its number on their central register.

Latte lady is spot on - the DBS is yours, and the school will need to see it and record the number. You can join the update service for an annual £13 charge which means that a new employer or organisation can (with your permission) check online that nothing has changed on your DBS since it was issued. This will make it quicker / easier to change jobs, but you must remember to keep your original certificate as a new employer will need to see that.

If it is for a permanent job, the school will also receive a copy of your DBS.

If it is supply, I always take my DBS check with me to every school I go to.

I am on the update service, which is useful for agencies, but schools tend not to use this service for permanent jobs as permanent teachers are not likely to pay £13 per year when schools pay for their own DBS checks.

happyteacher I'm sorry but that is not true any more. Since 17 June 2013 the employer no longer receives a copy at all.

The update service is great - I wish more people joined up to it.

Ah sorry, my mistake. You can tell how long it is since I worked as a permanent teacher :)
