Been headhunted - WWYD?

Without outing myself too much, this is the scenario.

Been in current job since Sept, its fine, has its issues but generally I like it. Head is a good person but I do feel a little sidelined for what I'm ready for.

New position (I haven't applied yet but is a pretty good bet that it will be mine) is a promotion, and in the perfect direction for me. It's almost handwritten for me. It really excites me. Probably start Jan.

I feel somewhat guilty about leaving good people in my current school to find a replacement, and a bit sad about leaving kids and a role that I like, even though it is limiting me.

Thoughts?

Life's to short. If you think the new job will make you happier and suit you better, go for it! Teachers are guilted into staying for the kids, staying so as not to create work for others... on and on. Put yourself first for once.

Agree - cut the guilt out of the picture. I was in a similar position in February, with the added complication that there were lots of issues at the school I was at and I was friends with the HT who was on mat leave, so by going I left her with big problems. But I knew I had to do what was right for me.

I split a piece of paper into 4 and wrote down all the pluses and minuses of each job, however small or tenuous. That made it very very clear.

Check carefully that the job and the school is what you want first.

Have you been head hunted? Even if you have it doesn't mean the job is yours you could just be one of many candidates the agency wants to put forward for the new position

Do it!!
If you don't, you'll always wonder what might have been, which will colour your experience of work.

Xael you are going for promotion - the fact that you can be promoted proves what a good job he has done mentoring you. This is the way things are and I'm sure he will be sad to lose you but happy for you. Don't worry.

Thanks all. Quitelikely - it's the executive Headteacher who has asked me to apply. I'm aware this is no guarantee at all, but it's not through an agency.

I'm still wavering but I am going to visit and see what I think and then go from there.

Keep that sense of detachment. Forget that you were approached about it; you still need to be selected over others. It's great that you feel that sense of responsibility, but don't let it colour your judgement. Good luck.

That's exactly what I did - went for a visit and to chat to the Head. I was very, very unsure about whether to even go, but as soon as I walked into the school it felt like coming home (corny, but it almost made me catch my breath). That made my mind up for me - as soon as I'd been there and chatted to her I knew I really wanted the job, but I took several more days to decide whether to apply or not!

Toomuch sounds like it would have been a very hard decision - lucky you felt it was so right! It's not easy. But either way, I guess I'm in a win-win
