Anyone out there who's good at easy yet creative school play costumes?

I've posted this in Primary, but would love the advice of teachers, too!

I need to costume 12 Year Fives (boys and girls) for a Witches Dance in our production of Macbeth. 3 of them will then be the speaking witches in the play.

They will be wearing black leggings/trousers and t-shirts. We want to give them some sort of greeny/browny/earthy colour, possibly with some sort of floating steamers/wings.

a bit like this www.ags.bucks.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/macbeth3.jpg

I can buy cheap lining material, but what do I do?

Should I cut a head hole and create some sort of poncho or serape and then cut up the arms? If I cut it with pinking shears, can I avoid hemming? (It will only be worn 4 or 5 times).

I feel so ignorant, and I just know there's someone out there who could do this!

For a poncho get a square of material (for y5 maybe a sheet from a charity shop cut in two) cut a cross in the middle to let the head through.

If you use a safety pin and pin under the wrist you will get a tighter grip/fit.

for the raggedy edges I'd make a small cut at the 'hem' then another higher and either make a jagged cut dfom one to the other or tear the material.

Any left over sheet you can rip in to 'streamers' and pin or glue on.

when I've been in too much of a rush to hem these sort of costumes I just painted the edges with PVA to stop them fraying. They'll probably only be worn a couple of times

real rush job = strips of the floaty material on elastic for round waists/chest and top of arms
I'd make them all a bit different, too
