Hello,

Sorry for intruding in your staffroom, but I'd appreciate your opinions.

I'd like to send a thank you letter to a former teacher (they had an influence on what I went on to study at uni). The problem is that I've seen them a few times since school, but out of shyness, I've pretty much ignored them each time. Quite obviously, and to the point of rudeness. For example, one time I was having coffee with another former classmate, we saw said teacher, they went over to speak, and I didn't, just stayed sat were I was. I know it's odd, but I'd like to know whether you think a letter of apology/thanks now (years later) would be appreciated or just a bit weird? Do you think they would even remember me?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm sure they'd remember you (especially if you put a bit of identifying information in the opening ie the years they taught you, who you were friends with, something funny that happened, what you looked like).

And the teacher would definitely, definitely, definitely appreciate hearing from you. If nothing else, it could be used in future job applications!!! I've met several former pupils from my first class 10 years ago (mostly they seem to have been working in the various Waitrose branches across the area!) and it's always nice to speak to them.
