Applying to a private school

I'm currently in a state school and am thinking of applying for a deputy post in a private school. Do you think I'd be at a disadvantage? Also, do you phrase the application form differently as the private school doesn't use SATs, levels etc. my current school, whilst being a state school, does have quite a lot of professional, middle class families and a lot of our children get into independent secondary schools. Do you think I should say that on the application form?
Any advise would be really welcome. Thank you.

Definitely apply, as they may see your state school experience as an advantage. Are you sure they don't do SATs? What do they do instead of levels?! I would put that it is a school popular with professional families and that many go on to independent secondaries, as that is relevant to the position. It sounds exciting - good luck!

What do you think we did before SATS?

Many independent schools have had nothing to do with SATS. It means we teach the subject and allow students to improve without allocating silly numbers that mean virtually nothing. There are studies galore which have investigated how students perceiv their marked work with and without SATS levels. We do 'comment only' for the younger ones, GCSE and A level grades for the older lot. And it works very well for us.

Thanks Fugacity. Is that the reception baseline? I think my biggest problem will be the 11 plus because I'm not familiar with that at all. Also, I rang to ask if I could look around and meet the head and they said no, only if you are shortlisted! Very different to the state system where you would be expected to visit before applying.

I would be worried about a school who wouldn't let you visit before applying, especially for a senior position. That's not my experience of independent schools at all. I think you'll have to be really open about your lack of 11+ experience, but say that you recognise how crucial it is that you get 'up to speed' very quickly should you be appointed. I don't know why I'm giving you advice - you are going to be a deputy head and I'm a main scale teacher! I do know a lot about the independent sector though. Good luck with your application.

Could twist the pupils going onto independent schools from your state to allow you to say you are aware of the demands of 11+ and higher level/skills advocated by the independent sector.
Parents will also be a big factor in the independent sector that you can show you have experience of. Something to do with understanding how to manage and capitalise on the demands and wishes of highly involved parents.
