Insulated mug to use in the classroom

We are not supposed to use normal cups and mugs outside of the staff room in case of spills etc and the potential risk to children.

But the school bought metal flasks with kids are not nice. The drinks taste metallic from them and the kids are not really very secure at all.

Any suggestions for a decent lidded drinking vessel that keeps the drink warm for a little while - in case get called away for a bit - and had a lid which stays on and doesn't leak. Oh and where your drink doesn't taste of metal or plastic.

A bit pricey at around £16 though.

Asda have some in - about £3.99, and I saw the same ones in our Poundstretcher equivalent - £1.49. They have a screw on lid and a sipper bit

Avex Contigo. Metal but no taint. Lockable lid. Easy to wash without taking in water in the insulated layer then dripping everywhere. Can be thrown in a bag without leaking as well.
After years of cheap leaky travel cups, it was well worth the money. I paid just over £20 for a twin pack off eBay.

Not a teacher, sorry, but saw this thread in active conversations and came on to say Contigo too. I love mine, it keeps things hot for ages and is leak proof even when you turn it upside down.

I've just seen another thread suggesting the Congito - will it be drinkable straight away, not too hot? Lots of people on that thread saying it keeps drinks very hot for a long time. I often want to be able to drink mine shortly after making it.

China mugs with rubberised caps are everywhere - eg tk maxx etc. it's what teachers at our school use. I'll see if I can find a pic

I have a lidded ceramic mug with poppies which dh bought me from sainsburys. It's great as there is no nasty taste. It isn't technically insulated but keeps drinks warm for longer than an open mug.

Agree with a ceramic one. I had a lovely one from Teapigs that eventually cracked, but it worked beautifully for years.

I got a ceramic cup with rubber lid in Sainsburys, new look do them too for some weird reason.

We've been told we can't use the ceramic cups with rubber lids as they're no safer than normal mugs.

I've got a Boden one I bought from John Lewis for about £15, which works fine. I bought it on the entirely sensible and rational basis that I was so cross that the HT had suddenly stopped my TA bringing me a drink on the day I'd done playground duty (no prior warning that open mugs were about to be banned), I got the most expensive one JLP sold....

Boden do some great ones, they keep drinks hot or cold for ages, don't taste funny, don't break and have the advantage of being dishwasher safe.

As far as I know we can have ceramic ones. Tbh I think the lid is the only criteria

Re: heat and contigo ones, yes they can stay boiling hot. I either add a bit of cold when making it or leave the top off for five minutes before the children arrive in the classroom. When its been locked, you have to open it away from you to release the pressure/ hot vapour (it's that airtight)

The Avex ones are brilliant. You just have to leave the lid off for a couple of minutes once you've made your drink to let it cool down enough, then they'll keep it warm for hours. They have them in Costco for a lot less than those on ebay.

Many secondary schools would be; "Teachers and support staff are not allowed to drink hot drinks outside of the staff room as is unprofessional to drink in front of the class"

I work in primary too and I love being able to take a sip of water (yeah, habits die hard, can't bring myself to take a brew) when my throat starts to croak, especially at this time of year! I have the starbucks screw top mug for when i'm out and about, i love it...

I'm very jealous; I'm primary and we aren't allowed to have hot drinks in the classroom in any way shape or form-boo!

Primark - they are fab. Don't leak, keep drink warm & don't taste funny. And most importantly, they don't have anywhere on them that can get manky like the others I have had do. Oh and they are £2.50 or less. Honestly, they are the best thing ever.
