We aren't allowed to use textbooks of worksheets at my school!

I used to quite like textbooks!!

I've sometimes photocopied the textbook... (What a waste...)

I'd love to work through a maths text book - the are presented so logically and sensibly, yet we have to mix them up.

They're certainly not the only resource, but I don't like the ay they are vilified.

For my school, it's not that it's frowned upon but the cost of books, especially with change of specs meaning that new sets of books need to be ordered. We purchased an online text book (hodder's dynamic learning) which gives students full access, but I also use photocopy other texts if I think they present the information better

The problem is with the constantly changing units of work. If the government stopped changing things, books would last.

I'd like to see how the curriculum has changed in the other countries that use text books so successfully. I would imagine little has changed, but-hey, they're still better than us.

Our government seems to jump on any band wagon going and change what's 'good practice' on a whim so everything needs to be rewritten. It doesn't raise standards-if anything, their constant meddling is what's trashed education in this country. Ofsted blaming poor teaching and not enough oral feedback or afl is just irrelevant.

It's almost as if some MPs have second jobs in Pearsons or the OUP!

Dd (15) was shocked to hear this reported on the radio she said her school uses textbooks a lot.

If ofsted came into your lesson for the 20 minutes when you were using text books I can't see how you would be graded anything higher than requires improvement. Teaching activities have changed to meet Osfted criteria not to what would best help children learn. I think this will always be one of the core issues with education in England.

Yes, I agree. It's annoying that the headlines are all things like

Teachers should use textbooks like x (fab) country
Lots of Teachers are inadequate say Ofsted
Teachers don't have to be qualified

But no one ever writes articles about how the changes in curriculum on a whim has totally shafted the education system.

I use a textbook but we don't "follow" it, if you see what I mean. I just use it for the resources and then design my own activities around them.
