Changing job - advice

It's been a gruelling long haul in RI school. Tried to leave at Easter, was persuaded to stay. HT said then 'only go when it's a really exciting opp'
Thing is, that has come up. Now. Deadline Mon interviews Fri.
Do I tell him, or apply and tell if/when I get interview? I will be most unpopular for considering leaving now!

Wait until you are shortlisted for interview and if you know references will be asked for. I am in exactly the same position- School in RI-just can't bear the atmosphere in my school any longer. Pretty desperate as I hate change and have been there for most of my teaching career.

I applied for two different jobs and no matter what, I am going at Christmas. I knew that one of the jobs I applied for would ask for references on a particular day if I was short listed, so I told her the day before.

Have two interviews next week so fingers crossed I get one of them.

Yes you will be unpopular but sod them- there comes a point where a cry of "but what about the poor children?" should be shouted down by "What about the poor bloody teacher!"

We have had hoards of staff leave recently and teachers in tears are a regular occurance.

Pity the HT can't see that she has caused most of this. She pisses of the good teachers and doesn't deal with the poorer ones- we all get tarred with the same brush. No quality replacement teachers apply as the school now has a reputation as not a nice place to work. I cant wait to be out.

be careful about waiting to see if you are short listed; my previous head proved to be very difficult unless she knew you were applying and not waiting until references requests (often requests are made prior to you know that you have been short listed)

Purple it sounds like a very similar school! Good luck, I hope you make it out!
There is a box you can tick to say check before asking for refs, but the turnaround time is v quick - prob find out Tues for interview Fri. I don't want a lot of hassle for nothing but if I do get called it's a bit sudden! I only work Wed to Fri so I'd have to call or go in on Tues and explain. Small schools where everyone knows each other anyway so v hard to keep stuff quiet.

I didn't tick the box as I wanted to be able to resign by 31st Oct. Didn't want anything to slow down the whole process.

One of my referees (an ex colleague) has already sent a wonderful reference in. I am hoping that my headteacher will respond quickly also. She has no reason not to give me a glowing reference.

I just want out...

Guilianna · 17/10/2014 18:24

Oh god yeah. HT could delay it and make things impossible! I think I better go in on Monday and put my cards on table. I have a gut feeling I will get interview, what happens after that is anyone's guess except if I go for it and don't get it I will be in real sh*t
If i don't get job I need to stay ...
Good luck next week!

Oooh - well done and good luck. What do you have to do for the demo lesson? Anything we can help with?

Each time I've changed schools (4 different ones) it's been at Christmas or Easter. I am sure there are considerably fewer candidates than in May - it's always worked in my favour. A lot of people don't like leaving their class part way through the year, or picking one up part way through, but it's never been a problem for me to do it that way. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages by a long way!

cricketballs · 21/10/2014 20:36

I have applied for a job to start in January and leaving my year 13 group in particular is something that I am having second thoughts about - how do you get past this? My main concern is that they are a BTEC group and I am the only accredited moderator in school for this level/course therefore their claims maybe affected

Phonics! I love teaching phonics! Even if I don't get it I'm really happy that it's out there iyswim. Am seeing the best in where I am at the moment so it's win/win I guess .... (I want this job)
cricket I know the letting children down is coming my way. How do you get past it? by realising no one is irreplaceable? I don't know!

How did your interview go Guilianna? I was offered both of the jobs I went for! Decided on which one I preferred and the other phoned me back twice offering more- begging for me to reconsider! Nice to be so popular!

So pleased to be getting out of my current school- control freak incompetent head- staff leaving like rats deserting a sinking ship. Can't wait to leave!

Guilianna · 25/10/2014 12:35

Well done purple! I didn't get mine - but HT was really nice about whole thing so at least I haven't got to dread going back after the holiday.
You must be delighted to have a fresh start! very pleased for you.
