Working in your DC school

Does anyone do this? Has it caused issues?

A job (teaching but non class based) has come up at DC's school and reading the job spec it looks like it'd be perfect for me but I'm worried that being a parent of the school will put them off me so looking for reassurance really before I apply!

It depends on what kind of parent you are.

It won't put the school off you unless you are already a pushy, difficult, demanding parent Grin

I'm definitely not one of those! DD hasn't been at the school long so haven't had much interaction with them tbh, just hoping it won't go against me in anyway!

I not only work at my kids' school, I teach them both. No alternative but everyone has / will teach their own children so it is expected. No real problems although some issues with my DD and girls being mean have meant I have had to work hard to be scrupulously professional when teaching the little bitches.

I work at my DCs school as a TA. I never have them in my groups. They were at the school and then a job came up, so similar circumstances to you OP.
I personally love being there and there have been no problems for the children getting used to me being there.

Yep, all four of mine were there when I worked there. Apart from the constant cries of "mini fuckery, we had your mum for..." Not a problem. (Ds liked it better than dd)

I worked at my dds school, it was fine . I got the job after she started as well. She used to ignore me as much as possible after accidentally calling me mrs mummy one day

I work at dd3's school, she's just started but dd2 was already there when I got the job. I'm non-teaching though so not such a big deal.

I wouldn't let it put you off applying. Good luck :)

Yes I teach in my children's school. It can be great but sometimes I wish I didn't! You get to see/hear things which take away the magic you witness as a parent. For example today I saw my young child made to stand in a corner whilst the teacher bellowed at him across the room in front of the class. He was frozen with fear. I heard every word and the way she spoke to him was just awful! The teacher didn't know I was waiting for my next class in the corridor. It might well have been justified but I just wish I hadn't heard it. He says he doesn't like school and I can see why. I quite often hear TA's shouting at small children in a really horrible way in my child's class and it makes me cringe. However as a parent you wouldn't see any of this as at pick up time everyone is all smiley.

I do find that if there is something I am not happy with as a parent,I tend to not say anything for fear or repercussions on my children. It can be very awkward at times and then you feel like a bad parent for not raising issues. Also staff children in my school are delibarately not chosen for things as it would look bad to the other parents.

Social events like children's parties can be awkward too as you can never let your guard down and be just a normal parent.

However it is lovely to see my children and I wouldn't get to see them so much if I wasn't there. Drop offs and pick ups are easier as no extra travelling.

Sorry to sound negative- just being honest with my experience. I am sure most people have much happier ones!

I have been working in my DC school for a few weeks (volunteered and then a job came up) & so far there are no problems.

However, I am the type of parent to let the teacher get on with it really.

DD (yr2) loves the fact that I get so see her do extra things in assembly (read to the school, light the candle etc) but DS (yr5) is rather embarrassed Grin

goldenlilliesdaffodillies - summed it up really well. I agree with all the points she makes.
Plus I'm in the school office and teachers were always giving my DD extra jobs to do, as they knew she would be waiting for me at the end of the school day. One of the things she most looked forward to when moving to high school, was no-one knowing who she was and not being given all the extra jobs

Interview today, nerves starting to kick in but I think I'm as prepared as I can be considering there is no teaching element to the interview.

This is the second interview now with no teaching part despite being a teaching role, is this becoming more common?
