wattle & daub

Anyone ever had a go at making wattle and daub with KS2 children? What did you use? How did it go?

Any hints or tips (other than ''are you insane? Don't do it!") gratefully received!

I've done it when I worked in an outdoor education place. It's fine but incredibly messy! We used to do it in a 6/7ft diameter pit in which the mud was dug over down to about a foot, then the kids added water, straw (or horsehair, if you can get it) and trampled it to mix it. We had an Iron Age round house that they then used to apply it to, but that might be going a bit far!

thankyou duchess, that's very helpful.

Anybody else done it, especially on a small scale in a classroom?!?!

I have, but using a daub pit. Contact the Young Archaeology group, they'll give you some excellent ideas and support.
