non teaching changing job in same school - pay query

I work in a school and am looking to increase my hours by taking on a second role alongside current one. The second job is a grade higher (which means lower pay) which I accept but do I really have to start at the bottom of that grade pay scale when I already have experience in the new role and know the staff and school well etc. I'm at the top of my pay scale for the other role.
previously I worked in business so not quite sure whether I can ask to start higher up the pay scale with in the allocated grade. Any experience?

You can always ask! One of our Tas has just got Hlta status recognised and she'll start on the new grade at the same pay she's on know, not the bottom of the grade, but she was previously at the top of her grade and will now get increments each April

I started my support role at the top of the scale. I'm totally overqualified for what I'm doing though (middle school science technician with a PhD!).

I agree with auntpetunia, it can't hurt to ask. Good luck :)

Thank you. Don't think it's an issue now due to school politics but useful for the future.

That sounds ominous. Let me guess jobs for the boys! Had similar in our place. Am currently looking for another job.

How the hell does that make sense?

Grades go backwards so someone on grade 15 would earn less than someone on grade 13. Head teacher would be grade 1.

Head offered job before checking with head of dept who is annoyed and then was very patronising suggesting my GCSE grades wouldn't be high enough for the positing. Firstly, I'm over 30 so can't believe anyone cares about my gcses and secondly I got 11 a grades so should be able to hit his minimum of a B grade request - said in such a way as to imply I wouldn't have that. He interviewed me 5 years ago and has my cv. Okay I don't expect him to remember it but didn't have to be so patronising.
Can't be bothered with it and wasn't completely sure I wanted it so I will start looking elsewhere.
