Hi

Are you an assistant head teacher or know someone is? I'm just wondering what your working hours look like during the week and whether you work on the weekend and/or holidays too?

Thanks Smile

Me, I am! I am responsible for behaviour, SEN (am also SENCO) and heads of house/ tutoring in a small secondary. I work 8 til 5 in school, every day, plus the usual evenings. The only extra evenings I have to do now are governors meetings once a half term. Then I pick up DD, do home stuff, get her off to bed etc. I usually then do work between around 7.30 and 9.30, sometimes more, sometimes less, usually 4 week nights out of 5. Weekends vary according to the point in the year, but I would think I do a minimum of 5 hours over the two days and sometimes as much as 12. Average hours in term time probably 60 to 65. The only other thing I didn't bargain for was the extra holidays time in school with results days and things. I only had three whole weeks away from work this summer, for example. I'm not complaining, just saying!

I'm one too, although am exceptionally luck to be on an 80% contract. I work Monday to Friday evenings (sometimes until v late) and on Sunday night. I have done lots of work this holiday (but this is due to a change in how my job works) all evenings due to young dc. Am in school until 5pm all nights bar Friday and get in after dropping DS at nursery.

I am, also the exams officer. I do all the organising at school, so stuff like cover, writing the timetable. I usually get in at 6.45am and leave when the school day ends at 5.30pm. In the holidays I usually work 8am to 5pm at school. I don't work evenings and only do weekends when I am doing the timetable in the summer term if necessary.

I do work more than most assistant heads though!

I work 8-5 in school, probably 3 hours a night, and maybe 5 at weekends. But it's seasonal really. Some times are bonkers, others lighter. I don't work more hours than when I was head of a core department, but it was a big department with some serious changes going on.

Thanks, that's really helpful! It seems like the hours are very long and demanding!

I'm equivalent to one, although my job title is different.

I get to work at 7.30 and try to leave by 4.30 most days. I work most evenings in term time, and sometimes at weekends, although I try to not do much at weekends. I do little or nothing in holidays though, usually by working like a loon in the last week of term.
