feedback from interview - to apply for similar position in the future - is it just courtesy?

did not get a job and the feedback I had was to apply for similar position in the future...is it just courtesy? I cannot describe how I wanted that job - suited me in all aspects. I still sometimes cry because I feel I did not prepare well enough for the interview - just run out of time with full time job and kids..

Sounds like they liked you and shortlisted you otherwise they wouldn't have said that. Why not ask them when they are likely to have another position and to call you when one comes up. Shows you are still interested. Hope you get the job you want soon!

Yeah I would. Be brief but warm, I think it will help you if something comes up and you apply again.

DH recently went for a Deputy Headship which he didn't get. The Head gave him the 'you were a close second, it was really difficult to choose, it was just experience... etc' talk and DH very much thought it was just polite BS to make him feel better.

However, before the end of the week the Head phoned back and offered him one of the other Deputy Headships at the school- so it clearly WAS genuine.

Won't hurt you to express your on-going interest I think!

Many moons ago we were told to write a thank you letter (along the lines of thank you for interviewing me, really enjoyed the morning at the school, meeting staff, great children and something that stood out about the school) if you did not get a job you really wanted. Best friend got her job this way, as the chosen candidate found out she was pregnant 2 days after getting the job and would not take up the position.
For the few minutes it takes to write an email, it just might keep you in the forefront of the HT's mind for another position.

People don't say that unless they really are interested; it happened to me and I applied for the next job, got it and it has literally changed my life and career path.

I understand you are disappointed but I think you should take the feedback as they meant it.

When we interview often there are candidates who came a close 2nd or we think wouldnt necessarily be right for the job we are interviewing for, but we can see that they would fit in the team or be suitable for another position that we may not be recruiting for just yet so in those instances we have given this as feedback.

We would never say it as a courtesy as its just wasting everyone's time and recruitment is an expensive process.

I'd send the email thanking them for interview and expressing interest in future opportunities. Good luck!
