Hi

Dd is in year 8 and has to hand in options form tomorrow. We only had the meeting on Thursday so not much time to ask questions!

She is doing

English Lang/lit
Maths
Triple science
History
French
Re
Citizenship
Btec sports leadership

She can then choose 1 more from the list and is currently short listing between computer science and geography.

There may be an opportunity to do an extra subject next year depending on progress. I think she should stick with geography and do computer science the following year.

Which would you recommend? She likes both currently a 5a in geography.

Pros and cons would be appreciated. I love geography and dh is a computer programmer and is pushing that way. Help!

Thanks

Just to add this us the first year they are choosing options in year 8.

She has a lot of humanities already so I'd go for computer science only because I think it's more relevant to getting a job (unless she wants to be a geologist Grin)

I disagree, geography has lots of transferable skills whereas computer science is quite limited in applications outside of that field.

Unless she has a particular interest in computer science or career aspirations in that direction, pick geography.

I'd pick whichever she prefers (for my dd that would be computer science)

But I think it's madness making them pick their options in Year 8.

Geography. No point in Computer Science - if she wants to pursue that later it will all have changed and she can take it up any time , whereas geography will set her up with transferable skills.

No it's not. It links to science/statistics/stock markets performance/maths/languages/logic/art/design/psychology and lots more

No it won't have changed, some of it will have but the basics remain the same, computers still run in binary. The programming languages have changed but the basics are still the same, if you can program you can program.

Saying it will 'all change' is like saying there is no point learning to read, e-readers will replace books by the time she is an adult.
