What do you do when Y1s find the word 'bum' hilarious?

It says it in the title really. I've started working with a small group of Y1s (I come into school once a week to run a programme). Last week we were looking at different plastic fruits - the peach (and I know I should have checked this) did look like a bottom. Huge hilarity ensued and it was virtually impossible to get them back on track. What would you have done?

I would just think I wouldn't use that particular model again.

I would have found their reaction sweet and funny. The innocence of things like this is lovely.

Oh dear! I teach secondary and my year 8s ways have a long giggle at the word Großvater (gross farter) and I let them have a good old laugh as soon enough they won't find farts funny anymore. No help, sorry, but I can imagine your class finding the peach bum hilarious!

Thanks - I think I was a bit po-faced about it and can see that I needed to relax and enjoy the moment more - I'll do that in future. And yes, the peach bum will be relegated to the back of my cupboard.

Don't do what my mother does. She was a teacher for forty years.

Whenever my children start being giggly about bottoms (or any part of the anatomy) she lectures them on how bottoms are a perfectly normal thing and not funny at all. We all have one. If someone had seven bottoms then it might be unusual enough to be noteworthy.

The problem is that this lecture just sets them and me off into even more hysterical giggles.

Try teaching year nines the verbs descendre and venir. Taught together because the both use être as the auxiliary verb in the perfect tense.

I remember in Spanish class in secondary school being taught reflexive verbs- a lot of them have the ending -arse. The teacher wrote it on the board and said "I'll just let you all get it out of your system. Yes it looks like arse. You can all have a laugh about it. Now lets get back to work."

I would laugh with them and say yes it does rather doesn't it! They are so lovely at that age. Bums are funny!

My twins are in different classes. When they did a human body topic in Y3, one teacher just used the word 'poo' when talking about defecation. Thirty seconds of giggling then everyone moved on. The other teacher referred to 'your daily bathroom visit'. Half the children didn't understand, and the other half found it so funny that they were still using the phrase several days later.

In French 'moins que' (sounds like, well... wanker) always raises a giggle... Most classes get over it pretty quickly but every so often one class is obsessed. For example, my current Y7 class and 'Piscine' (Yes... pissin) one Smart Alec actually said 'Miss, you're not allowed to do that in a piscine'...
