farm based geography for year 3?

Can anyone give me any ideas on what to include in a geography SOW related to farming for a Year 3 class?
My partner teacher is off ill so I am having to plan everything on my own, and I work much better with someone to bounce ideas off! (Would never choose to work in a 1 from entry for this reason!)

Could you look at where different food comes from.
You can look at food miles, fair trade, and look at where different countries are on the map.

How long are your lessons?

Different types of farming and the areas they takes place in such as sheep farming in mountain regions, arable farming in different areas. I found a map on this on the internet a few years ago when I taught a similar topic. You could also look at staple foods in different parts of the world and why landscape, weather and farming practices make these crops so important.

try and link it to the area that you live.

For example in the lakes you would look at hill farming - beef and sheep breeding

Lincolnshire - Pig Farming

Down 'south' - Arable farming

Cornwall and Devon - dairy and and lamb

I've found some great information via a Google search on food miles on the Soil Association website. Our new topic is Food so I've planned a few lessons from it.

any chance of a visit to a farm local to the school if you're in such an area? And if so, research project that type of farm (kids and you) if you are in a city then there are city farms - so most are livestock based, still good to research dairy industry and different ways of farming.
How long does your topic last? (in my childrens school, they spin it out over the year and visit the same farm three times in the different seasons, so the children get a longitudinal view of the farming year)

another thought. if you want a history link, the bbc did Victorian farm series and a wartime farm programme too - absolutely fascinating. Might give you good cross curricular links? Also chance to watch a tv programme and compare the now and the historical setting. Loads of opportunities for literacy too. oooh I want to do this too

Mrs shrek, that is a lovely idea but Victorians are ks3 history.
Staffordshire learning network, David Walsh books have lots about farming.
You have to first of all work out what route you want to go down UK farming or a more where does our food come from (food miles, where countries are, country case study)
If you want schemes of work, or resources for either just pm me. However I teach middle school (year5 to year8) geography so will need work to adjust them.

ahhh pity about the Victorians being diff KS. We do (SEN) creative curriculum so cover all kinds of topics from ks1 and 2, also our local history topics tend to be rooted in the Victorian era so we catch it there through industry and artefacts. Middle school sounds amazing. best years to teach imho

Yep sadly mrs shrek after this September the Victorians are a ks3 topic- so no point writing a sow you will only use once!
Out of all the age groups I have ever taught middle school is the best you get to teach you specialism (hums) without the teenage/ exam board stuff to deal with! Love it.
