Job application advice

Sent in an application for a job at the school that I did my PGCE placement at. Came away from the placement with a great review, lots of outstanding lessons etc yet didn't even get shortlisted. Am absolutely gutted. If they won't even give me an interview what chance have I got?!

Followed all the advice on TES, made sure I addressed the person specification etc. Obviously either got it completely wrong in terms of the application or thinking they liked me on the placement.

Sorry I don't even know what I'm looking for from this thread. Just feel really, really gutted :(

I honestly think that quite often schools prefer a new face. it seems to me they always think there is someone better out there! You also don't know how many people applied, perhaps they are looking for someone with more experience? Try not to let it get to you. I would get someone to have a look at your statement of application just so you can feel confident that you are presenting yourself as well as possible then just carry on! I know how you feel - I recently failed to get an interview for a post I was certain was right for me. Try not to dwell on it.

Thanks for your reply Cansu, luckily have woken up feeling much more positive. I sent the application I'd submitted to the retired head of dept at the school who now runs the leading teacher scheme and got good feedback. She said my letter read well and showed me in a good light and said she was surprised I didn't get shortlisted. She said the same as you that they may have been looking for something in particular. So onwards and upwards, need to just get on and apply for more. Luckily in my area there seems to be plenty to apply for!

Sometimes schools already have someone in mind - someone else known or an internal candidate. The ad is just for going through the process. :-(

Sorry that you missed out on this one - chin up and next time you will get the job you want.

Agree with comments already made. Same thing happened to me 6 years ago at my placement school. Looking back, it was a good thing, because I think I was trying to play it safe and stick with what I knew (not suggesting it's the same for you). I got a job at a great school where I learnt loads, then went on to become an AST. I wouldn't have done that if id got that first job. So, good luck - there will be a great opportunity for you just around the corner!
