HILTA doing more teaching than LSA work and unhappy.

My class LSA is a HILTA and usually does 1.5 days PPA cover and other cover when she's needed. She's been 'asked' to do 3 days teaching cover (different classes) and doesn't want to as she'll be teaching more than being an LSA and apart from the workload and stress the HILTA money isn't worth it.

Does anyone know if there is a limit on how much class teaching a HILTA can be asked to do? She is contemplating dropping her HILTA pay and going back to an LSA which is a shame as she is good and enjoys it in small doses. TIA

This is often debated on Primary Ed, and as a retired Level2 TA I don't know if there is a definitive answer - different schools and LEAs seem to handle it in different ways.

But could a Union - either teacher union, or TA union not give advice? See if there is union website with FAQs to help.

Will do thanks, just though some wise MNer might know :)

I'm a HLTA at the moment, and also a qualified teacher. I cover some PPA, but i've found that it works best if i'm available for last minute sick cover as well. If I get more than enough PPa cover, the issue becomes when do I get the PPA to mark the work done whilst i'm covering PPA? ARRGH! My upper limit is 7 periods of timetabled cover, and the rest is for my interventions and classroom support. I'm lucky in that my SLT team are sensible. The first step is surely to ask for a meeting and raise concerns? If a teacher backs her up it will help enormously.

Thanks sheri.a meeting is a good idea but unfortunately my head doesn't
' discuss' just decides and my LSA probably would rather just drop it than raise an issue, doesn't like to cause waves.
