Early years learning journeys

I really enjoy this forum and until now haven't posted, I am am early years TA and have worked in different settings, my area of concern is the child's learning journey that is created by the key worker. My understanding is that observations are annotated and linked to an ELG for the child. I have always chosen which area my observation supports. In my new setting the obs are all collated and we can indicate which area it could be attributed to. The teacher then reviews all the obs and chooses the area she wants it to go under and this can often differ. I just wanted to see if anyone else had experience of this as it is the first time I have come across this way of working

Does it really matter? I presume the buck stops with the teacher so she will have to justify what choices have been made; I'd say it was her call really.

What do you want to happen?

it's the teacher's responsibility to complete their profiles so it's her call really. one ob can link to many areas of eyfs too so no-one is necessarily wrong.

We link our obs to as many areas as fit.

You don't assess against ELGs til end of year R, surely?

You definitely don't link to the ELG's until the end of the year - they're summative assessment. You make judgements against the age bands in each area throughout the year - formative assessment. We link to as many different areas as needed too - I go through their journeys, but don't change the judgements that my early years assistants have made. We do do ours online though and it's so much better than sticking things in a flipping book!

You should have a look - it's called Tapestry. Go to eylj.org or join the Early Years Forum to sign up. (Sorry, can't remember which I did first).
It costs us £30 a year for 60 children - calendar year, not academic year. It's the first year we've used it, so feeling our way through it - but so far so good. We are lucky that we have IPads for photo's and instant uploading.

lara can parents view these online learning journeys?

what happens with them at the end of the year?

i have my elder kids learning journeys and ds4 is in yr one and its nuce to.go into the classroom and see his with photos, work etc. we have their ones from pre-school and reception etc as well.

i think online sounds good but its nice to.have something to keep and the actual work, i assume you scan in or photograph instead?

also for the children its nice for them.to.have the physical learning jpurney to.look at. ds4 loves looking back on his ones from.pre-school and reception.

Parents can view and contribute to their child's journey once you set it up. At the end of the year you can transfer it all onto DVD for parents to keep. You can print out each page, but it's turned out to be a PITA - but I may be doing something wrong! :)

Actual work, as in pictures, writing etc, is photographed on the iPads and uploaded, or it's in books that go home anyway.
