What shall I do with yr6 on 'change over' morning?

I'm leaving my school at the end of term, so I'm getting year 6 while the rest of the school is having their 'taster' session with next year's teacher. "Oh, just take them outside, or you can have the hall if it's wet." was the only advice.

What do I do with 32 tired pre-teens, who I do not know? Any suggestions for suitable activities please? We'll have just had sports day so I'm keen to avoid duplicating that. They've also just done a day of 'team work' challenges which included making towers from marshmallows & spaghetti, etc, which is my usual standby fun activity.

Could they make 'message books' to get each other to sign as a leaving primary school memento? Or does the school have any cameras/av equipment they could do stuff with?

I have Yr6 and, at the moment, I would honestly say that a game of rounders or some such is a fab idea. Turn a blind eye to any who want a quiet sit/chat whilst 'fielding' and let the others have a good game. They will enjoy it and so will you !

OddBoots Both lovely ideas, but I have to be outdoors or in the hall - all the classrooms are taken up, so I'd have no computers to download pics/video and no resources to make books :-(

No help to you I know, but our LA has 'moving up day' on the first Wed in July every year, and ALL Yr6s go up to their secondaries for the day. Primary schools then take the opportunity to have their 'meet the next year's class teacher' day, and schools will almost always release staff who are moving to other schools, so they can meet their new classes too as it all balances out.
I don't understand why other authorities don't do this - it's just such a good solution.

For those who don't want to play rounders, there's loads of jobs need doing at the end of year.... why not ask all the other staff in advance if they've got stuff they can do. Things like sorting through all the lost property and returning what they can and sorting what they can't into categories. All the communal areas can generally do with a major sort out / tidy up. Reception teachers might appreciate some Yr 6s to print out / laminate coat peg labels, etc.,etc. There's loads if you give the staff a couple of days to think of things. My Yr6 dd loves doing stuff like that.

BackforGood A co-ordinated change over day is what happens at my DC's catchment: two full days at the end of term. No such luck where I teach!
Liking the idea of jobs to do :-) I'll ask around.

Could you get hold of a camera, laptop and printer? Get them to do an American style year book with a pic of each of them, get them to write a bit about themselves (handwritten is fine) then have votes for things, nothing too twee like 'cutest couple' but things like nicest smile, helpful, etc.

Include things like, "my favorite thing at school X was ....", "I learned how to ............"

Once they have done their own sheet and the votes add a couple of group pics and some notes about the school for new pupils/parents (written by the kids) then make one book and photocopy so they have one each and do a couple more for the school.

They will (I assume) be going to different secondaries so it will be a souvenir for them and something new parents can have a look at.

Are the new reception children in? If not, why not take year 6 down there? That's what my old school did sometimes, and the year 6s absolutely loved playing with all the toys they remembered from 7 years ago!!
