Space and Time theme in Primary

I need to prepare an interview lesson for Year 3 and I've just been given the information that the theme is Space and Time and I can branch into any subject.

I think I'm getting myself into a right tizz here, getting really nervous and getting brain freeze. I was thinking of the earth's rotation and day and night but think I'm going off on a tangent.

Does anyone have any experience of the topic Space and Time and how it might be approached? Tried looking on TES but really don't get on with the new format and can't seem to find something that specifically says 'Space and Time'. Nerves might be blinding me though.

Year 3 - how about simple time calcs, but with a space theme?

Counting up & down in 5s as a quick starter.

60 mins in an hour, 5 mins in each 'interval' on a clock (BIG card clock with hands on a split pin or get a SMART board interact one ready on a memory stick). Count round how many mins from little hand 'here' to little hand 'here'...

If an astronaut starts getting his space suit on at 12 noon, and it takes him 20 mins to get dressed, at what time will he be ready?
It then takes 10 mins for the airlock to open. What time is it now?
etc, etc adding minutes...

Then do the inverse - if he starts to radio Earth at 3pm and ends at 3.15, how long was he on the radio for? If he starts eating freeze dried icecream at 4.50 and finishes at 5.10, how long was he eating it for? (crossing the hour boundary now).

Does rather depend on how long you've got! If they get it easily, then move into non multiples of 5.

Or she. We are allowed in space these days. Valentina Tereshkova did it in 1963.

I have a bit of a Valentina obsession, I found out about her when I was about 8, until then I thought only men had gone into space.

Anyway why not start with Valentina, it is 50 years since she went into space. (bit of history)

Get them to add up their ages, how many of them does it take to make 50 years? (bit of numeracy)

What has changed since then? Lots of pictures, do they know what x y and z are? (more history and a bit of tech).

Just one thing, are you sure they mean space in the sense of space ships etc. Or do they just mean space as in the space in the room?

Hmmm, you have a point. I was just so blinded by nerves that didn't consider space as in space in the room! I was just thinking that, being a cross-curricular theme, of space as in sense of space ships.
Letter just says theme is Space and Time. Aaargh!
