A Mean Cookie?

My young relative is just finishing her PGCE year and is applying to primary schools. She informed me that she intends to use a bit of humour in one application to a school, that she will finish later day. The job spec mentions valuing staff who have a sense of humour. So among her personal qualities she's planning to put, 'I bake a mean cookie!' My husband and I both thought it was a bit dodgy. I'm not sure whether it is the American slang, given that she will be teaching young children English. Or maybe to us it didn't seem the best way of showing a sense of humour.

Or are the two of us just being old-fashioned and humourless.

I personally wouldn't put it in.

I wouldn't if I were her.
She needs to remember that the HT/GB may be sifting through dozens of applications and that may be the phrase that gets hers moved to the reject pile.

If she gets as far as interview then hopefully her personality, including her sense of humour will be evident.
In my opinion her applications should be as professional as possible.

I'd leave it out, not least because its about as funny as piles.

Thanks everyone. I asked my young relative how she was getting on with the form, later in the day - and she said she had already emailed it off! So no chance for me to suggest the use of 'humour' might be problematic.

Will await developments, and see if there's any opportunity to offer suggestions with other first teaching job applications.

You can advise her to remove it for future applications if required.
