Doing a PGCE in Scotland if you intend to work in England?

Would this be a good idea? Are there any major differences between English and Scottish education systems that mean the training wouldn't cross over? Has anyone done it?

I think Scotland is the only place you can do a PGDE, which appeals to me.

Any info much appreciated.

Don't know if its still the case but when I did my training (degree not pgce) if you trained in Scotland you could only teach in Scotland. However that was about 18 years ago!

I did my PGCE in Scotland and have never taught there. First job was overseas, then 3 years in an English school a few more at an overseas school and then an english 6th Form Coll.Now a SAHM! The only problem I ever encountered was when my first english school wanted my DFE number and I didn't have one. They sent me one no problem.

There are massive massive differences between the two systems - completely different curricula and assessments.

However, if you are a qualified teacher in Scotland you are also one in England and I do know a few people who are now working in England because the job situation up here is pretty dire.

I did PGCE in England, first job in England then got a job back in Scotland 10 years ago. I realise that is the opposite direction of you OP, but i don't think there are massive differences at all, once you have been taught to teach the differences in assessment etc are not a big issue IMO. Just make sure you get registration with the relevant bodies. You may however find yourself disadvantaged at interview if you are not up to speed with systems in England. Good luck!

Warning: it's hard to do the other way round so if you intend to teach in Scotland then train in Scotland. The Scottish system requires you to register and they said they wouldn't register me as my degree is in a different subject to my pgce. In the end I didn't need to move so don't know how hard it would be to change their mind.
