Those who work half days

How long is your official half day? Looking to reduce my hours at work and perhaps do mornings only. Have been told that is possible but would need to be in school from 8.00 - 1300. A full day is only 8.00- 1530 so surely half would be less? lunch is 1200-1300 btw...

I would say 8.30-12 would be reasonable contracted hours, but you may of course choose to arrive earlier or stay later in order to set up or mark. I do supply and get paid the same for a half day - whether it's a morning or an afternoon - even though the morning is obviously longer. I think it's just the way it is.

My school has just recently changed supply hours for mornings and afternoons - 4 hours for a morning and 2.5 for an afternoon. It used to be 3.5 for a morning and 3 for an afternoon.

When I worked 0.5 mornings only I did 17.5 hours. This worked out as 8.30 til 12 daily.

In reality I did 8.00 - 1.00 most days, but through choice (to not take work home) and I had the choice to walk out at 12 on days when I wanted to so I could meet a friend for lunch.

It was a fab working pattern and really suited my baby DS. Now I do 2 full days (8 - 6) and 2 half days and my DS (2.5) really finds the long days a bit much.

I do 5 mornings and officially do 8:45 to 12:00.

However, in order to not take any work home with me at all, I get in at 8:15 (can't arrive any earlier because of dropping dcs at breakfast club then half hour drive) and often don't leave until 2pm.

I'm primary so teach purely maths, english and guided reading which are obviously more planning, resourcing and marking heavy than afternoon lessons would be.

I find it quite tying, tbh. Even if I leave at 12:15, I only have 2.5 hours to do anything before I have to collect the dcs and I'd like to have a whole day a week to get jobs, etc done.

Money-wise, I lose out too. I work more hours doing mornings than I would if I did 2.5 days.

I work three and a half days. No-one would complain if I walked out the door at 12 on my half day, but usually I choose to stay and get things sorted for the next week before I leave. I do my lunchtime club that day too as I don't have to go and teach straight after!

I view it like directed time. On an afternoon I can't just leave at 3.15 as the expectation is that we work til approx 4pm (except on meeting days), so I don't generally leave at 12 either.

I do tend to sit and have lunch with the other staff too, once I've got my stuff sorted as that helps me keep up with the gossip and news.

Lady, you shouldn't be losing out money wise.

In our authority, a morning is worth 55% of a days wage and an afternoon is 45%. I'd check if it is the same with you.

I do 3.5 days, but it works out as 0.71, not 0.7 of my salary.

All mornings should work out at 0.55 of your wage (compared to 2.5 days 3 ams, 2pms which should be the same as 0.51).

If you are only getting 0.5 I should check that with staffing payroll and raise it with the head/govs once you've checked what it should be.
