Just sharing some good news! A question as well!

Today during my performance management meeting, (following observation by a new head) she asked me to take over the role of Leader of whole school Welsh! She is a trained Estyn inspector and rated my lesson as good with excellent features. So pleased! Lots of work to do but happy that I have been asked to take responsibility for something.

Just one question- Should I be given TLR point for this? I am due to finish my NQT in April. I am part time (0.4) member of staff but with lots of supply so in the school a lot. I'm relatively new to teaching so not really sure.

Any replies gratefully received!

BEWARE!

Welsh is a HUGE issue. If as a school you don't do well in Welsh you can't achieve more than Adequate across the board in the new guidelines (so my staff have been discussing at school).

It isn't just about the lessons, it is the whole school use of Welsh, whether the inspectors hear the teachers using it lots every day and whether they hear the children choosing to use it every day naturally too.

Not one of the subject leaders is given a TLR in my school (sadly). There aren't enough to go around.

If it still interests you, go for it. But it is a biggie to take on, especially if you are only really there 2 days a week + supply.

Thank you! As an Estyn inspector she understands what is required for the standards to improve and she has advised me about this. I know it is going to be a huge ask but I think if I can prove to her I have got what it takes it may be good for my career. As you said welsh is poor as a whole in our school but we can definitely improve. We have an inspection due in Sept 2014 so lots of time to get new strategies implemented. I have agreed to take on the role already so am getting ready for a whole world of work!

Read your school's pay policy and make a case to the Head directly for getting paid more to do this it sounds like a huge amount of work! If it's such a big deal re inspections you are in a good position to negotiate. TLR is not the only option schools can sometimes increase pay as a 'retention' thing but you will only know if you look in the policy and ask.

Thank you Phineyj. I am also a school union rep and have a conference this weekend so I can ask for advice then.

As much as I am pleased to have extra responsibility, I would also be pleased to have extra pay!! I will check out the policy tomorrow and maybe ring staffing.

My job description document was changed in front of my eyes so I suppose that puts me in a good position. The head seems very fair so far as she has organised the PPA time I was meant to have for the last year and a half. I think that if I am owed the money she will back me up in getting it.
