Parent witnessed dd having a massive tantrum

Was shopping on the way home from school with dd, who is 20 months old. Dd starts kicking off in tesco for no apparent reason, really screaming. She has done this a couple of times but this was the worst public meltdown. My way of dealing with it was to just pay for what we had already in the trolley and make a hasty exit.
I was paying, whilst stopping dd from jumping out of seat, throwing her shoes and screaming like a banshee when I heard a tutting. Then a voice loudly saying, "goodness if you can't control your own child, I dread to think what my *** has to put up with"
I immediately went scarlet. If this had just been a random comment I probably would have told them to bugger off. However, this came from a particularly difficult parent to deal with and I just rushed away.
Fabulous. Just exactly whom I needed to see this display.

Noooo! How bloody typical. I always think the smug parents are the ones who are actually struggling themselves, for whatever reason. If I see a child having a tantrum in a supermarket I think "thank God it's not just me"! I actually often try and make a point of smiling at stressed parents as I hate it when people are critical of normal blowouts. Don't worry about it. Teachers are not assessed on how their children behave in supermarkets and nor do Ofsted take any advice from people who observe a snapshot of your life.
If push really comes to shove, feed her child loads of Haribo and send him/ her home back to lovely mother / devil woman!!

This is one of the reasons I like to commute to work - so I never encounter people on my time off, when I'm likely to be getting cross with one of the DC or having to deal with meltdowns!

Don't worry about it. I'm sure every parent has had at least one major meltdown when out in public with a toddler. It's just bad luck that the difficult parent saw yours. I'm sure some people think all teachers should have magical child-taming skills that other parents don't possess but I'm not sure you can really reason with a tantrumming toddler.

One of the girls in my year 8 form witnessed an epic tantrum from my dd2 (2y9m) in the supermarket the other day. She pointed me out to her mum with 'That's Miss x, my form tutor, she shouts at us like that too'

I wasn't even shouting, I was just talking in a firm voice, but now it sounds like I spend my whole life shouting, which I didn't think I did :(

However, I wouldn't worry about it, at all. I'd just think 'so the fuck what' many children chuck a tanty, being a teacher doesn't make yours any less likely to do so and only a prat would think otherwise!

I would actually say something to the management at your school, I think it's completely unacceptable. I'd be fuming! You are "linked" through school - that's how you know each other - so that makes it a school issue. Depends on school and management I suppose though. We've banned parents from school property for less!

I honestly wanted the ground to swallow me up. Of all the people in our town to witness this, it would have to be her. Typical.
No point in saying anything to management as they don't back us on things that happen in school so I have no chance with something said in a supermarket 10 miles away.
Oh well, today is another day. Dd hasn't had a tantrum yet!
